ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- Two women have been charged with animal cruelty after officials removed 51 cats from a home in Beamsville, Ont.
The women, aged 31 and 73, lived in the house with the cats and face four charges each under the Ontario SPCA act.
After receiving a tip, the humane society removed 49 cats on Feb. 2 and two more this week.
Of the 51, three had to be euthanized and the rest were put up for adoption.
Meanwhile, the humane society is getting help with their care from area animal hospitals providing services, including surgeries, for free or at reduced cost.
The accused, whose names have not been disclosed, are scheduled to make a court appearance April 21.
The charges include causing animals to be in distress, failing to provide adequate and appropriate medical attention, failing to provide adequate and appropriate sanitary conditions and failing to provide adequate and appropriate ventilation.
Beamsville is about 90 km southwest of Toronto.
