British tabloid "The Sun" is reporting that Daniel Craig is close to being announced as the next Bond. All sorts of crazy stories get printed in British tabloids, so once again, take this one with a grain of salt.
Based Upon: (2/20/05) This 21st installment in the Eon/Broccolli series of 'James Bond' movies will kick off a new run of movies starring the 6th man to play Bond in their series, with an adaptation of Ian Fleming's very first Bond novel... 'Casino Royale.' 'Casino Royale' was adapted as a British TV show in the 1950s, and as a spy spoof in the 1960s, but this is the first time it will receive the sort of "serious" James Bond film treatment that so many other Fleming novels that came after it got. (3/28/05)
It's worth noting that a new series of books, targetting younger readers, called the "Silverfin" series, are now being published, featuring the adventures of the young James Bond, trying to put a "Harry Potter-ish" spin on the British legend. There's even rumors that the Silverfin books may themselves be developed as movies.
Premise: (2/20/05) The exact details of the premise have not been announced yet, but in the novel, the action was centered around Monte Carlo in Monaco and nearby southern France, as British spy James Bond, AKA 007, is sent to the Casino Royale to use his card-playing (Baccarat) and gambling abilities to ferret out a Russian spy, in a scenario worth millions of dollars (or Euros as the case today may be). Given the end of the Cold War, that spy may not be Russian in this movie, but that's probably just one of many changes.
Premise Notes: (3/26/03) There is currently no official word about what the premise of this movie might be. The latest film in the James Bond series is *always* besieged by dozens of premise rumors (often fueled by creative writers working for British tabloid newspapers), so this movie is expected to be no different. What is known, of course, is that this film will depict the further adventures of British secret agent James Bond (Brosnan), AKA 007, which will no doubt take him around the world at least once, engaging in elaborate action sequences in exotic locales, trying to foil someone's evil plans. (2/20/05) Now that we know for sure that this is an adaptation of 'Casino Royale', we know the gist of the plot too. There are rumors, however, that this original novel will be more of an inspiration than a direct source, so some elements will be added or changed.
