I stole this from Ten Packs in another thread:
If you watched most TV up here, you'd have to look outside to know you weren't in the States. (fewer flags Wink) For instance, last night we watched American Dreams, West Wing and Law and Order.

I'll get lots of argument in this forum, but I'm among the large group of Canadians who find that a really GOOD Canadian TV show is a treat, not a everyday occurance.

Good Canadian TV shows are not as common as they should be. I think this has a lot to do with attempts, especially by the private broadcasters, to imitate the American model. That gives us a second-rate copy of a product that was questionable to begin with.

We do have a lot of talent in Canada though, and when left to its own devices that talent comes up with original programming that rocks.

Think about the shows that the CBC has produced and continues to produce...This is Wonderland, The Newsroom (with Showcase), The Nature of Things, 22 Minutes, Rick Mercer. That's just stuff that I've watched this week.

There are other shows...I wish to hell they wouldn't have cancelled Snakes and Ladders for instance, and a while ago CBC played three sit-com pilots and will produce a series based on popular vote. All three were excellent and none of them looked like a rip-off of an American product.

So where are the Canadian private broadcasters in all of this? We obviously have the talent and ability to produce quality material. They are the ones always yammering about how they can do everything better. So why don't they? Why are they so willing to make us sit through re-runs of predictable slop from another country instead of producing what Canada is so good at?

Our networks will only make Canadian programs if the government is willing to pay for them. This applies only to CTV and Global and they are making millions off the ads they sell on all their imported US TV shows.

Just last year, even "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" was complaining about cutbacks in gov't funding and threatening to go off the air.And this is a successful show!

I wouldn't be sad to see 22 Minutes get taken off the air. I hate to say it, but after the original cast broke up, it's definitly not as funny. I used to be a big fan of Made In Canada. I really enjoyed that show, I'm disappointed it only went for as long as it did.

Get the government to pay - the ultimate solution to everything..... *sigh*

I wouldn't do that. I would require 1-1/2 hours of non-news all-Canadian content during prime time every day in addition to the present rules. All-Canadian means conceived, written, produced, and performed by Canadians.

The Aspers would scream bloody murder, which could be fun to watch by itself, but in the end it would certainly give a boost to Canadian production companies and talent.

It would be successful too. Look at how popular Corner Gas is...the only non-CBC Canadian show I can think of.

The private broadcasters keep on insisting that they are Canadian and represent Canadians...let's see them put their money where their big flapping mouths are.

The tv networks here like to signal sub and wrap around advertising to make money. Fair enough. But they take advantage of Canadian content rules by showing news that is cheap tp produce. On a regular weekday counting Global national the Global affiliate here in Vancouver shows 7 1/2 hours a day of news. They should not be allowed to use news to fill in their Canadian content quota. They should have to create programming. CTV and Global are bad for that. Especially Global. Primetime is always simi sub from American networks and some Global Canadian Content is shown Saturday night or at obscure times. CHUM and especially CBC (of course) show a lot more Canadian programming than Global and CTV.

I agree. I love news...it's what I watch the most. It shouldn't count as Canadian content though, or at least it should be separated out of the larger mix.

Is Puppets Who Kill a Canadian show? Does anyone watch it, or have watched it? It's on the Comedy Network, if anyone's interested in checking it out, it has its ups.

Was Victoria, now Ottawa
Kids In the Hall was my all time favourite Canadain show. The reason why it was so successful was that Lorne Micheles was behind it so CBC didn't censor it or edit it as much. The problem with Canadian TV is alot of it is written badly. They cram Canadian content without thinking if the show needs it. Enough with Ann Of Green Gables copies, like Road to Avonlee and Emily of New Moon. Just pick a good show and run it. Give someone with talent a chance and keep the corporate noses out of it.

That's one thing that pissed me off when it came to the show Made In Canada. It really had nothing to do with Canada (except for the fact it took place in Vancouver.) It seemed it was titled that way so people would know it's Canadian. But if it's got Rick Mercer, most likely it would be Canadian... Anyways, the show I found very funny, and it had a quick smart (and just as often) stupid humour. A shame it went off the air. I liked it better than Monday Report.

Bullard was a terrible talk show host, and his firing was well deserved. We have done that type of TV show better-Vicky lasted 8 years. Play on CBC was my favourite talk show.

Anyone think that TV is on the decline and that they are slowly removing the half hour comedy or the hour long drama shows. Now you can watch a reality show... Paris Hilton and Ozzy???
One thing I really hate is the cable companies that take over the American channels to show a Canadian carried program. I did write to the CRTC and was told that it maintains the Canadian Content on TV. I have Canadian channels and if I want to watch American, I should be able to with the Canadian interferrence. (Global and Fox always show the same prime time shows in our area and Global always takes over and broadcast on both channels)
