see other stories about us giving away military aid to other nations (Ukraine, Haiti, etc…while selling more armament to Saudi Arabia).

Is it really as bad as I read (?) and if so what are we sending for aid militarily elsewhere???
I'm quite certain it's bad, when i read about the gear they're replacing in those rare cases where they do replace gear the stuff is ancient and way past it's best before date. Also - it took 11 years for the military to choose a new pistol, something that takes a few years for most other sane countries. So that gives a glimpse into how we get here.

Look at our aircraft situation. The cf-18's are BADLY out of date and past their prime, everyone has said they need replacing for well over a decade, the airframes are like 40 years old and we're still years away from purchasing new fighters.

As to why we're selling to others - they're willing to pay. IF it weren't for that our arms industries would go broke and we'd have to buy someone else's gear on those rare occasons when we do buy. And we're giving away stuff so we don't look like complete incompetent unarmed asswipes in the international community.

Meanwhile Defence Minister Anita Anand said on CTV’s Question Period last week that Canada should “be able to walk and chew gum at the same time,” and balance its NATO commitments with securing the Arctic and promoting peace in the Indo-Pacific.

OTTAWA -- Canada’s military forces are “ready” to meet their commitments should Russia’s war in Ukraine spread to NATO countries, but it would be a “challenge” to launch a larger scale operation in the long term, with ongoing personnel and equipment shortages, according to Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre.

So they can walk, but they haven’t been issued the boots, or the gum, or the staff to do the walking….& the old gum has been donated to Haiti and Ukraine.

They have a 7 year committee looking into that.

If our committments are "cheer with mild enthusiasm from the sidelines and send bottles of motivating combat-ready maple syrup then absolutely.

The fact is that our soldiers are very well trained and some of the gear we have is decent enough but at best we're equipped to play a tertiary combat role or a training role. We have very little in the way of modern tanks or artillery, our aircraft is ancient, we have no 'himar' type weapons system of any note, we have minimal heavy lift capacity to support forces with supplies.

Rape survivor belittled about her mental health at DND-sponsored symposium
A number of people who did not realize their microphones were on started belittling a former air force member who in 1981 had been gang-raped by five military personnel.

A former Canadian Forces member who survived being gang-raped was belittled and faced derogatory comments about her mental health after tuning in to what was billed as a healing symposium sponsored by National Defence.

Diane Rose, who deals with post-traumatic stress disorder and has been advocating for sexual misconduct survivors for more than a decade, joined the Restoring Hearts and Minds Symposium on Wednesday.

The virtual event was promoted by INJ20K, an organization that represents some sexual misconduct survivors, and was sponsored by National Defence in partnership with McMaster University and groups like True Patriot Love.

During the event, Rose asked an online question.

But during a brief break, a number of people who did not realize their microphones were on started belittling the former air force member who in 1981 had been gang-raped by five military personnel.

They questioned why Rose had been allowed to ask a question, talked about her mental health and warned that she creates problems, according to Rose and others who listened in on the event.

“These people attacked me and not one person spoke up,” Rose said of the estimated 70 individuals taking part in the symposium. “What kind of human beings are they?”

The individuals didn’t stop attacking Rose until she informed the group that their microphones were on. Some of those who participated in the virtual event later reached out to see if she was okay. “Don’t stab me in the back and then turn around and pretend you’re concerned about me,” Rose said. “That’s beyond hypocritical.”

The event was billed as “a safe space for MST (military sexual trauma) survivors” to “share their experiences and heal alongside others.”

Organizers did not apologize to Rose for what happened.

But Lori Buchart, co-founder of the group It’s Not Just 20K (INJ20K), said one person who made comments later issued an apology. “This was not a person on the organizing committee, which I was part of, or with INJ,” she added.

Margaret McKinnon of McMaster University confirmed comments were made during the break, although she was unable to hear them in detail or determine who was saying them. “As soon as others noted comments were being made about a person with lived experience, I did come on screen immediately to intervene while also monitoring the closing of the live microphone,” she said.

McKinnon said no transcript or audio recording of the comments is available.

She noted one individual, Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Alena Mondelli, did apologize and agreed to leave the symposium.

Mondelli said in a statement she inappropriately commented on the interaction between Rose and the panellists and while it was not to be meant as an insult, “I clearly overstepped my boundaries.”

Defence Minister Anita Anand provided a pre-recorded video greeting for the event and did not hear the comments, her office stated.

National Defence spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier said the department is aware of the concerns about comments directed at Rose. “We are looking into it further, which includes making contact with some participants as well as the event organizers,” he added.

DND provided $50,000 to McMaster for a series of symposiums.

Rose said she has been advocating for sexual misconduct survivors for 12 years. She is known for challenging the Canadian Forces’ leadership on their lack of action over the years and said this incident will not put an end to her advocacy.

Earlier this year Rose and another rape survivor, Donna Riguidel, faced a lawsuit from Buchart, who alleged the two had defamed her.

Buchart went to court in Calgary to claim the two women were behind an April 19 email sent to Veterans Affairs Canada, National Defence, media outlets and various health-care specialists involved with helping those dealing with military sexual trauma.

The email at the centre of the case was sent by a group called Canadian Veterans of MST and raised allegations about bullying by officials with INJ20K. The email alleged survivors of military sexual trauma were being booted from INJ20K because they disagreed with the organization’s decision to work more closely with Canadian Forces senior leadership.

The contents of the email weren’t made public until Buchart and INJ20K published portions of it online.

Buchart had denied all of the allegations raised in the email, including that she was ever involved in any bullying. Buchart was suing Rose and Riguidel for $100,000, according to court records.

But Justice James Farrington of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta struck down Buchart’s statement of claim and ordered her to pay $750 each to Rose and Riguidel.

Royal Canadian Navy Commander Nancy Setchell, an INJ20K advisory group member, suggested in a tweet that Buchart can still commence a new legal action against the two women.

Incredibly disgusting. What amazes me is that the women in this symposium were just as bad as the men in their open mic statements about the survivors of said assaults.

….With their country increasingly overrun by gangs, Haiti’s political leaders are now calling for a foreign military intervention to restore order in the Caribbean nation.

While it’s usually the United States that does these kinds of things, this time the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden suggested that Canada should do it – an idea that wasn’t immediately dismissed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “Canada is very open to playing an important role, but we must have a Haitian consensus,” he said at a summit of La Francophonie in Tunisia.

But with the Canadian military plagued by critical shortages of almost everything as well as one of the worst staffing crises in its history, there are almost no circumstances in which it would be even remotely possible to mount a “friendly invasion” (?) of Haiti.
Well, Joe ain't stupid.
Twenty years from now it might make a good comedy movie though.

The U.S. has tapped Canada to coordinate a multinational military intervention in order to restore security. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said a military intervention involving Canada would require support from the Haiti’s opposing political parties.

Interesting, from Trudeau. “Requiring support from opposing political parties” from the most divisive PM Canada has ever had. Justin, just BAN their guns! Get Greta to shake her finger at them, then promise to plant some trees, then find the right costume and pose for some ‘Selfies’ and then go into hiding.

Opponents of military action argue that it could lead to increased gang violence and keep an unpopular transitional government in power.

In recent weeks, Canada has imposed sanctions on several high profile officials and economic elites in Haiti in an effort to clean up corruption. The sanctions included former president Michel Martelly, two former prime ministers and Gilbert Bigio, considered to be Haiti’s richest man.

Get Freeland in front of a camera stating that she doesn’t wanna do it…. But she’s going to freeze their bank accounts and publish their names…..while she comes across as totally ingenuous while bordering on shrewish and almost orgasming at the same time. It worked in Canada in February. Then get some more Selfies.

Trudeau has also promised $16.5 million in aid to Haiti in November, with $8 million for humanitarian aid to be delivered by the U.N. In January….into a country with a collapse that has disrupted the country’s supply lines, making it made it harder to provide food, water and medical aid…so this aid would be delivered how again?

Canada is Haiti's second largest donor after the United States. During the unsettled period from 1957 to 1990, Canada received many Haitian refugees, who now form a significant minority in Quebec. Canada participated in various international interventions in Haiti between 1994 and 2004, and continues to provide substantial aid to Haiti.

We just are enriching the war lords by providing funds since they have no infrastructure to even distribute either money, food or water. What a waste!!

Maybe it is time to cut our losses. The residents don't seem to appreciate our help.

Those poor bastards (the non-government & non-gangs) don’t have a whole lotta say in appreciating or not about pretty much anything. Hasn’t that countries population tripled in the last (maybe 60years?) couple of generations? Typhoid, etc…rampant.
Something has to be done, but what (?) I have no idea. I’ve no idea if the Gov’t are any better than the gangs in all honesty, but the people (any people, anywhere) deserve better than what they have currently.

forty years working at DND and I can honestly tell you they have perfected wasting your money.

I've developed a passionate loathing of bureaucrats and bureaucracy.

not a one of them willing to risk their jobs on principle.

I worked for a company in Manitoba that won various "contracts" from DND. There, I learnt very quickly that there was absolutely no responsibility or accountability to some of these contracts. For example, DND wanted an "ammunition shed" built. We bid on the contract and won. But because our bid was "low" and they didn't want to lose any funds from future contracts, they asked us to increase the amount of the bid to include "windows" in the shed thereby increasing the total cost of the shed. Why the hell would anyone want windows in an ammunition shed? The only reason was to increase the amount of the bid so it was closer to their "projected budget" I wanted to blow the whistle but my boss (& hubby who was in the military at the time) told me that was a major no no and that there'd be severe repercussions. I was young, newly married, new job so I said nothing but to this day, I regret not making an "anonymous" call to the local paper.

It infuriates me and it also is the same at any non-profit agency that receives their funds from government. I also worked for a non-profit organization that receives all its funding from the Federal & Provincial governments. I did pretty much everything from reception to accounting and, of course, every year we would have to put in a proposal asking for our funding to be renewed. When I did the budget, I would look at what was spent where and how much. Were we "over budget" or "under budget" and what did we need to do that was fiscally responsible. If we were under budget, I reduced the amount of the request; if we were over budget, I would try to determine how our estimates went wrong and adjust accordingly. In almost every situation, I was told not to do that but to use a percentage to increase the overall budget usually the cost of living amount each year. To me though, that wasn't the right way to come up with another budget. I preferred to analyze what was spent, where and how much and were our estimates "reasonable." But the thing was they didn't want to "reduce" the budget they always wanted to increase it instead, even if it wasn't necessary. I know, I'm a coward and freely admit it and it both cases, I was young and too scared to stand up for what was right.

That's how government works because they know that the taxes coming in can be arbitrarily altered by simply raising them and we've no choice but to pay. God forbid that we have any accountability on government spending. Both parties have been guilty of this and it's about time it stops. Our taxes are already high enough as it is.
