Further, or total, integration with the USA would be a big mistake for Canada.

We are the one nation on earth that actually could go it alone, although trade will help us be more prosperous, for sure.

Too much integration of economies and security will reduce our soveriegnty. At this time of so many nations around the world losing their soveriegnty to USA foreign policy , and even occupation, Canada would do well to maintain our distance.

And of course, things are being done behind closed doors and in secrecy, with both the public and the legistlators being ill informed as to the actual plans afoot.

We have never needed "shared policy" - NAFTA didn't turn out to be great for us - lets not go farther down that slippery slope.

These are dangerous times to get so close to the world's #1 terrorist, the #1 polluter and global warmer, and #1 in commission of crimes on foreign soils. Plus, America is a bully. Lets steer the world towards a better way by resisting the American way.

I couldn't agree more with you.

The amount of reasons to draw further back in our relationship with the States is staggering, however one has only to point out that despite being the States largest trading partner we are treated with absolute disrespect(Security measures, Softwood, Mad Cow.........). As an emerging economic powerhouse Canada now has the upper hand in the trade situation and we should not hesitate to exploit that fact.

The US is a failing Superpower that has made major mistakes over the past 6 years that will bring about major repercussions from within the US as well as the international community - why on earth would we want to be involved in that debacle?

There is a difference between exploiting your own strengths and actively trying to screw people. Softwood lumber is a prime example; The rules were clear, but the U.S. decided to find other rules, or ignore the rules altogether. What is being said, is that the U.S. can't be trusted. Treaties and agreements mean nothing. Better we have a lever, and use it.

Nice word games #juan, but Canada has its own history of breaking the rules when it protects Canadian interests. In case you haven't noticed, you don't walk on water, despite having an abundance of it.

I am not talking about putting unfair practices into play but rather finally leveling the playing field so that we can move on with our relationship in a productive fashion.
For too long we have kowtowed to the US to our disadvantage and now finally we are in a position too end all bickering and resentment by creating a real Fair trade situation. Which will benefit both sides in the end.
