OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian government is reluctant to give new help to lumber firms as long as a window is open for discussions with the United States on negotiating an end to their timber dispute, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Thursday.

" President Bush has indicated a willingness to resolve the softwood lumber dispute. We've tasked officials to come up with some options. It's probably not helpful to proceed with any kind of new support for our industry while this initiative is going on," Harper told a televised news conference in Alberta.
"But I've told the president that in the very near future if we don't get a resolution of this issue, we intend to support our industry and to support it much more strongly than it's been supported in the past, and that will include coming up with a loan guarantee program."
The Harper-Bush agreement to study what it would take to resume negotiations was reached in Cancun, Mexico, on March 30. The dispute centers around U.S. duties on Canadian wood.
