So what do Canadians celebrate on Canada Day? I know the official version, the union of Upper and Lower Canada, New Brunswick and I forget the other province under the British North American Act of 1867, essentially maitaining loyalty to the British Crown.

So the celebration is for what? Loyalty to the Crown? The union of the Provinces? Or does it differ with each Canadian?

I think its an excuse to have a nationwide party. :D

But moreso for me its just the sense of pride and gratitude that I feel being Canadian. I am of the opinion that all of us were lucky enough to be born in North America (or Europe respectively), so we should be celebrate it. Not like JohnB, in that Canadians are more deserving than everyone else because we're Canadian. Just that I'm greatful for the chance to be Canadian.

You haven't received many replies because you already know more than most of us do.

We celebrate how lucky we are by performing acts that abuse our luck. This year I'm going to celebrate Canada Day by having a BBQ with my friends at the lake. We're going to swim, stroll, vegetate in the lush Albertan summer and maybe even catch a quick snooze under a tree. Later in the early evening as the horizon turn pink then purple and all the stars come out we'll all stroll down to the Legislature Building where all the gardens are. We're going to make sure we're good and 'sociably drunk' by the time the fireworks start. Then, as the final pyrotechnic crescendo plays out, as a sacrificial toast to this, the truly best of places in the world to be born or live in; this isolated inconspicuous Eden; this Paris on the Prairie, this land of prodigy, we're going to take out every $bill we have and burn it while dancing around in the flowers.

Canada is: Beautiful. Lucky. Expensive. Rich. Fancy-free. Strong. Naive.

Monet would love my city and in most of the country people do have their own little Shangri-la's.

The fouth Province was Nova Scotia, the four of them formed the Dominion of Canada.

That said, I myself see Canada Day as simply Canada's Birthday. This year the Nation is 139 years old, and in my opinion the best Nation on Earth, even with it's short-comings considered. Anyone that has read my posts on this forum will know that I am extremely proud to be a Canadian, July 1st is just one more reason for me to celebrate it.

Aeon, there is nothing wrong with someone being proud of their country, I met a guy from Senegal a few years back. HAving been in Northern Europe, Canada, the US and Australia he was convinced the best place on earth was Senegal. How are you going to argue with him? Everybody has their own view of their country and different things are important to different people.

Well , there is nothing wrong at all of being proud of our own country, which is surprising, i am proud to be a french-canadian, but i ddon't think we are the best nation on earth, quite far from it.

I think out of the standard right now, Canada is a very good, if not one of the best countries over the years for health-care, accepting minorites without unrest (for example with 200+ groups and not the riots or violence seen in other places, for example, France), health care, U.N peacekeeping, Human rights, but we need to improve, especially with regards to the military and aboriginal rights.

So if not the best one of the best nations in the past say 40 years. And that is something to be proud of, because we could have easily slipped or something could have occured in that time period.

I would buy we did good in the past 40 years, however with everything we did to the natives indians even to these days, is something we should be shameful for quite some times.

In what "way" would that be? Oh yeah, the rhetorical, non-existent, illusionary and completely superficial way.

In no stretch of the meaning can Canada be characterized as under “British rule”. None at all. Like a young child absorbing a role model, Aeon has learned well the bombastic vernacular from his moon-beam conspiracy sub-culture: It's true because I say it is. No other reason is really needed . Say it over and over again until it’s true.

Well as the leader of our country still is the Queen. Technically you could consider Canada apart of Britain or British Ruled. And it did take until 1982 to have our very own Constitution.

For the third time aeon, please present me with an example of a state that is 'better' (keeping in mind that better is a subjective term) than Canada.

He can't. Quebec is merely a province.
