One of Britain's quirkiest architectural treasures has been destroyed by fire.

The Crooked House pub in Himley, West Midlands, was built in 1765 and mining subsidence made the building lean to one side.

As a result, optical illusions inside the building appeared to move objects uphill along the pub's dado rails and bottles appeared to roll the wrong way along tables. Furniture and fixtures appeared not to hang plumb, including the grandfather clock and the chandelier.

Just last month, Historic England was requested to grant the building listed status.

But now the building lies in ruins and hundreds of heartbroken locals lament its destruction. West Midlands mayor Andy Street has called for an investigation...
