Honestly, I would've loved to see Brian Mulroney stay on and win a third majority government.

According to Wikipedia, the PC's had a 38% support rating in the polls at the time opf his retirement-

Too bad Kim Campbell had to mess things up and cause the worst defeat of a government in Canadian history. Campbell was an incompetent leader. If she didn't screw things up, this modern right-wing Conservative Party we see today wouldn't exist.

Kim Campbell was the sacrificial lamb. The Party insiders knew what was going to happen (not to that extent, however), and none of the people who would have been good leaders were willing to step up to the plate, because they knew they'd never win the election.

The fact that Kim Campbell was a horrible leader only compounded the inevitable mess.

If lyin' Brian Mulroney ever had the slightest inkling that a win was still possible, he would have stuck in there like $hit to a blanket. There was, however, no such hope. Bulroney was by this time, the single most hated figure in Canadian federal politics, which was evidenced by the election results that cannot be blamed on Kim Cambell.

That heading might give me nightmares for a week! 8O

Too true, nobody in their right mind would have taken the job and still valued a career in politics. It was more akin to Captain smith handing over the job of Titanic's Captain when the ship was standing vertical in the water, all Campbell could do was ride it to the bottom. The defeat can be summed up as a stiff reaction to the blatant disregard for democracy in forcing the GST down the collective throats of the country, the only reason Chretien didn't suffer the same for not following through on it's removal. Was that he had no competition, the NDP of the era were too week and the conservatives divided.
