Bell Helicopter laying off 1,100 workers, including 300 in Mirabel

Bell Helicopter is reducing its global workforce by 1,100 employees, including about 300 in Mirabel, north of Montreal, due to weak sales of military and commercial aircraft.

The reductions, representing nearly 13 per cent of the Textron (NYSE:TXT) division’s workforce, are expected to be completed by mid-summer. Most of the job cuts will affect workers in Texas.

Mirabel has 1,500 employees, 450 fewer than a year ago.

The company said it had planned to reduce production of the V-22 military helicopter but the anticipated rebound in the commercial helicopter market didn’t happen.

In an email from CEO John Garrison, employees were told Tuesday that the staff reductions apply to all areas of the business, and include management and unionized workers.

A voluntary separation program available to all eligible employees in the United States and Canada could reduce the number of layoffs.

The company said across the industry, commercial orders and deliveries in the medium-sized aircraft market are significantly below forecast. It’s also experienced lower customer parts purchases and the continued impact of automatic U.S. federal spending cuts known as sequestration.

“Staffing decisions like this are always difficult — but they are necessary to ensure that Bell Helicopter remains a competitive industry leader well into the future,” said Bell.

LOL Bites you in the azz...

What manner of creep would make a comment like that about highly skilled, high tech workers losing their livelyhood (or anyone else losing their jobs, for that matter)?
