GATINEAU, Que. -- Police say a two-month-old baby who was fighting for her life in an Ottawa hospital after allegedly being shaken by her father has died.
Emergency services found the girl unconscious after being called to a residence in Thurso, Que., on Wednesday.
Her 25-year-old father was arrested hours later and charged with aggravated assault during a court appearance Thursday.
The Crown opposed the man's release and he will remain behind bars at least until the case resumes Monday.
A police officer confirmed on Thursday the baby had symptoms associated with shaken baby syndrome. She died Friday night.
Police say an autopsy will be conducted early next week and may lead to more charges being laid.

That's so sad, cases like this just break my heart. An otherwise healthy two month old child shouldn't be dead. :(

Dad charged with manslaughter in Thurso tot death
By Tony Spears, Ottawa Sun First posted: Monday, July 20, 2015 11:23 AM EDT | Updated: Monday, July 20, 2015 03:11 PM EDT
A father accused of assaulting his infant daughter in an alleged shaken baby incident is now charged with killing her.

The 25-year-old Thurso, Que. man had initially been charged with aggravated assault after a July 15 encounter with his less than two-month-old daughter sent the young girl to hospital.

The girl died Friday and on Monday the father was charged with manslaughter.

The man, who cannot be named because of a publication ban, wore a long bushy beard and a Che Guevara T-shirt.

He nodded at supporters during a brief court appearance.

Crown prosecutor Marie-Helene Magnan asked the judge to withdraw the aggravated assault charge against the father and said she would be opposing his release on the manslaughter rap.

Defence lawyer Marc-Andre Cayen said he is still awaiting full disclosure of the Crown’s case against his client and the matter was quickly adjourned.

“He’s doing the best he can, given the circumstances,” Cayen told reporters after the court appearance was over.

“It’s not easy for anybody.”

About a dozen supporters filed quietly out of the courthouse, declining to answer questions.

“He has the support of his family,” Cayen said in French.

“He’s in a fragile state.”

“He’s a man who’s never been before the criminal justice system before.”

An autopsy will be held on the infant’s body in an effort to pinpoint the cause of her death.

Her father returns to court Wednesday, when dates for a bail hearing may be set.
