Councillors in Merritt, B.C., have ordered the destruction of a home where a father killed his three children.
Council voted unanimously this week to give the owners of the abandoned and dilapidated trailer until March 15 to demolish the property or the city will do it for them.
Allan Schoenborn slashed his 10-year-old daughter Kaitlynne's throat and suffocated his sons, Max, 8, and Cordon, 5, at his estranged wife's home in 2008.
Two years later, Schoenborn was found not criminally responsible for the killings because of a mental disorder.
Councillors said they've received many complaints about the trailer and despite numerous notices from the city, the owners have neglected to repair it.
Council was told the trailer has sat empty for years and is a painful reminder of the killings.
"Since the date of this tragedy, the property has remained vacant, has incurred significant damage to the interior, and exists as an offensive stigma to the immediate neighbours and the whole community," planning services manager Sean O'Flaherty told council, the Merritt Herald reported.
Schoenborn is being held in a psychiatric hospital in Port Coquitlam, B.C. In 2011, he sought day passes for escorted trips but later cancelled the request.
Allan Dwayne Schoenborn is shown in an undated RCMP handout photo.RCMP HANDOUT
