Tony Abbott is on the ropes. The Australian public have about had it with his ways - equal parts thuggish and thick. Finally members of his own party seem to have had enough of this anchor round their necks and have introduced a "spill motion" that could result in a leadership contest.

Abbott has vowed to fight to keep his job but the contempt in which he's held is palpable.

These two Aussies explain Abbott's predicament perfectly.

They're Aussies so language may be offensive to the sensitive virginal crowd..........

The Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand starts on Saturday. Australia are in Pool A with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Scotland and their fiercest rivals England.

Then, later this year, the Rugby Union World Cup gets underway in England. Australia are in Pool A with Fiji, Uruguay, Wales and their fiercest rivals England.

Should Australia win both those matches with England and/or they go on to win one or both tournaments - and they'll be amongst the favourites for each one - then a wave of euphoria will sweep over that cricket and rugby-loving nation and Abbot will keep his job.

But should the Aussie nightmare scenario happen and Australia are beaten by England in both tournaments, then that'll be the end for the Liberal Party leader (bear in mind that in Australia the Liberal Party is a centre-right party, not a centre-left one).

Australia doing badly in the cricket and rugby may be enjoyable for the English but the Aussies will take it out on Abbott. I bet you.
