When a massive, three-storey wave broke behind him, Robbie Maddison thought it might be the end of his life.
The Aussie daredevil, who spent two years figuring out how to ride a modified dirt bike on ocean waters, took his stunt to Tahiti, where he was filmed literally riding on some of the world's biggest surf.
In a recently-released YouTube short entitled 'Pipe Dream,' Maddison appears to be swallowed up by a wave in the Pacific before emerging from the mist. He spoke with Surfer Magazine about the stunt.
“I honestly thought that might be the end of my life,” said the 34-year-old Maddison. “I’ve never felt like I was in the wrong place at the wrong time more than I did right there. It was a near-death experience.
“At the end of the day, the images and footage say something pretty awesome, but the ferocity and how gnarly that thing was can’t really be put into words.”
Maddison's modified ride is equipped with water skies, helping it glide above the water at peak speeds.
“I fantasized putting skis on a bike and riding on water,” he told Surfer Mag. “It was a stupid vision at the time, but I kept toying with it, playing with designs and concepts, and eventually it became a reality.”
The X-Games gold medallist currently holds the world record for longest motorcycle jump.
Maddison jumped his bike 106.98 metres in 2008 to top the mark he set on New Year's Eve a year earlier.
