August Landmesser (born May 24, 1910, presumably killed February 1944) was a worker at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, best known for his appearance in a photograph[1] refusing to perform the Nazi salute at the launch of the naval training vessel Horst Wessel on 13 June 1936.[2]

I was reading a book about the American ambassador to Germany at the time (can't remember his name), and in the leadup to WW2, even Americans and other foreigners would get beaten up and/or arrested for not doing the Nazi salute when officers went by.
