Anne Frank day care in Germany to be renamed

A day-care centre in Germany named after Anne Frank is set to change its name after pressure from migrant parents.
The day care, in the small town of Tangerhutte in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, has gone through renovations over the past 14 months and one of the things looking to be overhauled is the name, which has been called Anne Frank since 1970.
“The discussion arose at the beginning of 2023 to make this fundamental change in concept visible to the outside world by giving the institution a different name in order to visibly mark this fundamental new beginning,” according to a press release from the town.
However, local reports said the move was driven by “parents with migrant backgrounds,” who found it difficult to explain Frank’s significance to their children.
The city council said parents and employees requested the name change, according to German newpaper Volksstimme, with the manager of the day care Linda Schichor explaining, “We wanted something without a political background.”
Tangerhutte Mayor Andreas Brohm clarified that no decision has been made and told Politico “it’s a discussion process that’s ongoing.”
Brohm added that the plan is to find something “that has a more positive connotation, not because Anne Frank has a negative connotation, but because people associate what they associate with it and with the day-care centre concept.”
Others were outraged by the possible change in name, with Saxony-Anhalt’s economy minister Sven Schulze, writing on X that his CDU party “will of course not agree to the renaming of the Anne Frank day-care centre. I hope all the other councillors won’t either. Not only in this day and age, but in general, such a proposal is completely absurd, instinctive and small-minded.”
Youth welfare group Miteinander eV argued that there are effective and age-appropriate educational concepts for teaching children and young people about Frank’s life and the historical significance it holds.
The group added: “Renaming the day-care centre sends the wrong signal, especially in a time marked by increasing anti-Semitism.”
On Oct. 7, Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, killing more than 1,400 Israelis and taking more than 200 hostages to Gaza.
Israel retaliated with a “complete siege” of Gaza and severed the north from the rest of the besieged territory with daily airstrikes as the Israeli army prepares for expected ground battles with Hamas militants.
Frank, arguably the most famous Jewish girl to ever exist, no longer aligns with the “new focus on diversity,” Brohm stated, according to Bild, adding that the parents’ requests were more important than the political situation in the world.
