Americans are smart enough to vote Kerry?

People keep holding out hope that Americans will do the right thing come this election. So why do they keep slipping and sliding down that Bush-lined path towards another four years of insanity?

A new poll (Pew Charitable Trust) is showing that the vast majority of Americans believe the United States is winning the war on terrorism, that al-Qaeda has been weakened and that attacking Iraq to get rid of Mr. Hussein was the right decision.

Same poll shows that the majority of voters continue to favour the President as the candidate better able to handle the situation in Iraq. In last month's poll, Bush and Kerry were tied, but now there is a marked increase in favour of Bush.

Oh, okay, so you haven't heard of the well-regarded Pew Charitable Trusts? They've been around for such a long time. Somehow I don't think the word 'propaganda' quite works when thinking of this group.

I meant propaganda as in the reason why the majority of Americans seem to favor Bush - propaganda by the Bush administration might make them thinking that Bush did make the right decisions.

I agree with that. What surprises me is how very little propaganda is needed to sway the American public to the right. They cry blue murder, for example, when they hear that Kerry might not have been quite as heroic as claimed, yet they turn a deaf ear to the bombardment of information about Bush's highly dubious military past. Just one small example, but I do not understand how the American mind is working these days.

The republicans are obviously winning the propaganda battle between them and the dems. I don't know if Americans are smart enough to vote Kerry, because if they don't, they're really heading down a road of unstoppable insanity.. probably worse than the last 4 years since he doesn't have to worry about getting reelected.

Exactly. Thing is, as far as I'm concerned if they vote him they sure as hell deserve him... but what about the rest of the world, which is hugely affected?

You have to keep in mind that Americans have been bombarded with a far-right message from the media since the time of Reagan. I know it's popular to call Clinton and Kerry liberals, even socialists, but the truth is that both put forth the same kind of ideas (on the political left/right spectrum) as all the Republicans, including Reagan, since the Depression.

My greatest hope is that Kerry wins and that a real political dialogue can open up in the US again. The Bush regime has polarised things to the point where all that remains is a screaming match and important ideas from both sides are being missed if they are allowed to be put forth at all.
