Proud to be in Alberta
Listened to a very interesting interview today with the lady in charge of windpower in Alberta. In it, she said that since Alberta started worrying about Kyoto long before Canada as a country did, they developed wind power as an energy source. Since this contributes to the enery grid in Canada, it not only reduces the reliance on fossil fuel as an energy source in Canada, it also creates green credits which can be used to offset any discrepancies in Alberta's emissions, and will also allow Alberta to sell emission credits. In addition, given the new technology this creates, there is also the advantage of selling this to other areas of Canada or other countries.

She suggests that Alberta should be viewed as an energy province, instead of just a gas and oil province, since Alberta is on the cutting edge of energy technology developments.

So not only does Alberta get the advantage of the energy produced by wind power, they also have developed a source of income by being in a position to sell credits.

What utter flubberguff. Canada can't buy credits from Canada. This is an INTERNATIONAL accord not an internal measure.

Why don't you get the simplest of ideas?

We're going to agree on this one blue. I've heard farmers who raise crops and grass may be in line to be paid for providing green space and a credit. Besides windpower there will be other credit worthy technologies develop. I know a person who is involved in this on a grass roots level, and yes, there are many ideas on how to have credits to offset emissions.

RE: Alberta Has Emissions

Funny, when I say that Kyoto will lead to new technology and wealth, I'm a lying communist. Now that Alberta has been forced into it, even while fighting Kyoto every step of the way, it's proof of their innovation.

Funny how that works....

Vancouver
Alberta has led the nation in developing wind power. More power to ya (pun intended). The Alberta native reserves are actually leading the way here. Much of the wind power in Alberta is being generated on First Nations land. Beats the hell out of casinos, fireworks and bootleg smokes.

I wish British Columbia was so progressive. While something like 90% of BC's electrical power is generated by hydro electric sources, most of the new power coming on line is natural gas powered. The Campbel government just doesn't get it.

Example: There is a Vancouver based company called Sea Breeze Power. They have proposed a 1000+ MW wind farm development for the Port Hardy area on northern Vancouver Island. It is one of the few really good wind sites in the province. The proposal has all the financing in place and has passed the environmental review. All that they need is an Independent Power Producer aggreement with BC Hydro. But - BC Hydro instead wants to develop a natural gas generation plant at Duke Point near Nanaimo. The project has been rejected twice because BC Hydro stacked the bidding in favour of this proposal.

At the same time, a coal mine near Gold River on Vancouver Island that is having trouble finding markets for its coal wants to build a coal fired thermal plant. The voters in the Comox-Strathcona Regional District turned it down - but that didn't stop them. Instead, the municipality of Campbell River - with a very pro-business (any business) chamber of commerce applied to have the mine annexed to the the municipality. So now, the municipality of Campbell River contains the town and a small Island of land 30 kms away that contains the mine. The residents who live around the mine and whom overwhelmingly expressed their opposition to a coal fired thermal electric plant - have no say. The municipality of Campbell River is likely to approve the power plant - and BC Hydro will readily contact for the power.

Although that's true, provincial credit purchase would be a good idea.
