A Canadian's view of Canada

So I have been around this forum long enough and have never seen this topic, I have seen what Canadian culture is from a Canadian's point of view, but nothing about how a Canadian views his or her own country. There is a thread "Isn't Canada Great", but not much response there. And in light of some Canadians offering their views on Americans and America, it came to me to start this thread. So please Canadians, share your views on how you view your country. What's good and bad about it? What makes your feel you are Canadian, if anything? How do you feel the world views Canada? Do you feel you are a free society? What do you think Canada will be like in say 50 years? Anything that comes to mind will help. Thanks

free? freedom is an illusion so oft chased.

canada?
cold oceans, mountains, salmon, the vast badlands of canmore to kenora, the many lakes of northern ontario, the smaller mountains of the east, ice, grizzly bears, cougars, lynx, bobcats, wolves, coyotes.
hicktowns and backwaters, metropolitian areas if even only metro by a canadian scale (but smaller is better).

I think of diversity as Canada's strength. Most of the issues around the world don't hit our radar screen. One can be of any race or religion and find a safe place to live. We're pretty tolerant of others. Most of us couldn't care less what our neighbours believe, do, or sleep with, as long as they don't bother us.

I view Canada's psyche as one that evolved from that of the hardworking immigrant farmer. I believe their spirit was a defining factor at Vimy Ridge, and still lives inside a Canadian hockey player (exception to this week).

Canada? It's a remnent of an age of thinking gone by. We have no real army to speak of. We are forced to choose the lesser of two evil during elections. We preach equality, but a good portion of our population, the french, expect to be treated better than others. It's always cold, despite the hate of the particular stereotype.

Would I ever leave? Not a chance. Because for all t's fault's, being Canadian is something unique, and something to be proud of. We are known world wide as generally good people, and that's something very different.

No nation is perfect, and while I could spend a considerable amount of time being negative I won't. For the most part, what I love most about Canada is the people. The nicest, friendliest most welcoming bunch of folks I can think of. Now I know there probably are others, but whatever. Candadians rock!

Canada is my home. It is the land that has fed me, sheltered me, educated me and protected me. It is the country that has given me all the freedom I could ask for to achieve whatever I want. Its a nation that has defined me and my family.

Are there negatives about this country? Of course, no nation is perfect. Could I have had the same quality of life living in another nation? Yes, there would be minor differences but I think countries like the US, Australia, NZ, UK and so on could have given me many of the same things I listed above.

But Canada is special to me, cause it is my home. It is the only home I have ever known and will ever know. I like the ideals that Canada stands for. Canada just fits for me.

I've been all across this country and nowhere do I feel out of place. May it be in conservative Calgary, francophone Rivière-du-loup, first nations's dominant Yellowknife or just plain different St. John's. I feel at home, I feel at ease because I know I belong.

It is very weird that I could feel so comfortable in a Canadian place 6,000 km away from my house, yet feel so different and out of place just 160 km away in Buffalo, NY.

There are a lot of you who love to put down this country; complain about every aspect of it and that is your Canadian right to do so. But I think you are missing out.

Well, Canada is great. Especially all the scenery it has. Scenery is everywhere, up north, in Northern Ontario, B.C, the rockies. If you ever went on a vacation these would be some places to relax.

And the people are friendly, and compassionate except for a few.

And that is what makes it great.

So that is my view on Canada, oh almost forgot, and we also had Tommy Douglas, and we have a great socialist tradition, provincially at least.

Severely missing out! The differnce bewteen DasFX and I... I have lived outside of Canada and made Burlington, VT my home for about 6 months... before I came home to Canada.

So please Canadians, share your views on how you view your country. What's good and bad about it? What makes your feel you are Canadian, if anything? How do you feel the world views Canada? How I view my Great Nation - Canada:
I see a quiet land of gigantic size which teachs me the value of being small... Great People, Lakes, Rivers, Plains, Mountains, Oceans, Dairy Farms, Bison Farms, Open Ranges, Oil Fields, Bustling Cities, to name a few ... most of all Simplicity.
I have driven through Valleys 10 miles wide and made it half way through and realized that at one time the whole valley was a 10 mile wide river... I have seen the silloete of the rockies to the setting sun on a warm Calgary night... I have felt the early morning steam roll off unknown lakes in Northern Ontario, I have felt the wind pierce my soul overlooking the Bay of Fundy... Canada is a Journey of the being.. not a land of destination... The ONLY way to know Canada is to Know Canada.

What's good and bad about it?
What's good... Freedom to paint Canada, worship whom or whatever you want, Talk about anything you want to any fine person in Canada... Freedom to be yourself... Room to breath... Freedom of Choice... Solitude of Clean, fresh water and a humble makeshift dock with a canoe and old guitar without a distraction ... Open sky's of the flatlands of western/central Canada... there is so much to list here.
What's Bad... High Taxes... I hate paying the government $300.00 a week in taxes.

What makes your feel you are Canadian?
It's like saying "Why do you ride a Harley?" If I have to explain it... you wouldn't understand.

How do you feel the world views Canada?
As a peaceful nation with many opportunities... except for some radicals who tie Canadian Politics into US foreign policy... Some americans actually beleive we all live in igloos and ride dog sleds... maybe in the arctic circle... haven't been there - YET ... so I don't know for sure.

Do you feel you are a free society?
Yes .... to a point... Here in Ontario... we are told what kind of Dog we are allowed to own... No Pitbulls... That isn't so free... but on that note... as long as we have a government (warlords in some nations)... we will always be told what we can and can't do ... so in that essence there is no such thing as a "Free Society"

What do you think Canada will be like in say 50 years?
It will still be Canada - hopefully with a lower tax rate ... but I doubt that one... Cities will be bigger... but Canada will be just as beautiful and vast as it is today! Hopefully Canada doesn't get too sucked in by international politics and fears by then either.

yet this canada is a constuct, a nice "box" to place various things in. It is not real. That is the truth about canada, it is not real. It merely a marker on a map, only existing within other constructs, but not real itself.
