Spain's 1-0 win over Germany in the 2008 final drew 1.3 million on TSN and RDS. However, those numbers were recorded before the introduction of a new ratings measurement system.
Audience levels for the final broadcast peaked at 3.6 million viewers as Spain went on become the first team ever to repeat as European champion.
Overall, 6.6 million viewers watched some or all of the tournament finale.
The strong ratings were well short of last year's Grey Cup final, which was watched by an average of 4.6 million viewers on TSN and RDS — and that was considered a down year. However, they were comparable to last month's Stanley Cup final, which saw an average of 2.67 million viewers a game in a series that featured no Canadian teams.
In the United States, the final drew an audience of 4,068,000 on ESPN, up eight per cent over the 3,761,000 who watched the 2008 final on ABC.
In addition, 563,000 watched Sunday's final on computers, smart phones, tablets and Xbox, with a minute average of 194,097.
ESPN said Tuesday the 31-game tournament averaged 1.3 million viewers, up 51 per cent for the 859,000 average for 2008. Digital viewers averaged 289,000 per game, with an average minute audience of 96,102.
The final was the most-watched telecast ever on Spanish-language ESPN Deportes, recording a 12.9 rating among the Hispanic audience with 1,125,000 viewers and 700,000 households.
