BREAKING NEWS: Three dead and up to TWENTY missing after avalanche hit party of school children on French Alps ski-run

Three people have been killed, including two pupils, after an avalanche struck a skiing resort in the French Alps, leaving three seriously injured and up to 20 others missing.

The avalanche hit skiers, including a group of nine students and their teacher, in Deux Alps in eastern France at 4pm today while they were skiing on a closed black run called Bellecombe, despite advice to stay away.

Three of the injured were found suffering from cardiac arrest, police said.

One of the pupils, a 14-year-old boy, died after being engulfed by the snow, according to local government officials.

The avalanche helpline confirmed that the students were from the Lycee Saint-Exupery school in Lyon.

A Ukrainian, who was not part of the group, was also killed, police said.

'Five people have been found and searches are still underway,' the head of the police unit, Bernard Host, said.
