On Saturday, on Prince Edward Island, the 2009 Canada Games are to be opened. The Canada Games celebrate the excellence of Canada’s amateur athletes, and takes place every two years (alternating Summer and Winter games—this year, it is the former). Amateur athletes who reach success with the Canada Games often have the chance to move forward as national, international or Olympic professional athletes.
To open the Games, on Saturday, Their Excellencies The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond C.C., accompanied by their daughter Marie-Éden, are to attend the opening ceremony at Credit Union Place in Summerside, on Prince Edward Island. There, at about one-thirty, the Governor General is scheduled to declare the Canada Games open, once Her Excellency addresses the Canada Games athletes. With regard to Canada’s amateur athletes, the Governor General said that Her Excellency “salute the efforts they have made as well as the courage and perseverance they have shown to attend this important competition.”
