I believe Unions are very important especially in a role of ensuring and improving safety in the work place. Otherwise I believe they should stay away from management, which is the employer's responsibility at his/her expense! :)
I have no problem with private sector unions . They can and at times do negotiate themselves out of a job . There are no such constraints in the public sector .

"The Unravling of America" by Wade Davis

This is a bit of a read but it has a very interesting outline of the changes that brought us to where we are now, the decline in community ties and the rise of neo-liberalism. He explains that our current form of capitalism has swung too far to the right and is in need of a correction.
I believe he misrepresented the current form of capitalism - it's has swung "too far to the left" and needs to be corrected. Most Canadians are "centralists" believing in liberal & conservative values equally rather than "extreme" left or right. I consider myself to be a conservative who is a "centrist". Most Liberals have swung too far to the left & some Conservatives too far to the right. Canadians (myself included) are neither. I used to vote Liberal - haven't now since Trudeau Sr.

The lions' share of wealth and power rest in the hands of a very few at the top of the food chain, and right wing philosphy exists only to maintain that status quo of rich white privilege. That's about as far from the left as you can get.

A lot of is did, Union is good it just priced and nitpicked itself out of business, free market will catch up making it feasible to try again.

It has and always will cycle
That is why Teamsters were not invited to the last big job I was on. All drivers were OEs. The last company I worked for locally is union in name only. The father of the current owner was our business agent for decades before starting the company. It amounts to a nonunion company with benefits. They are right though, you can't compete with low rent companies and expect all the union fat. Good company to work for though as long as you produce.

I figure doing away with your socialist health-care system'd be a good start.
I don't know about scrapping it but a major overhaul is in order. Most people are good with the single payer part, but there is no logical reason why that payer has to be the sole supplier of services. Up until a few years ago the hospitals got block funding and when they ran out of money they simply begged for more. There was no cost breakdown or fee schedule for any procedures. Not even so much as a cost on dressings for individual procedures. And yet doctors offices are private operators that work on a fee for service.

I don't agree - I believe the "top of the food chain" includes BOTH the left & the right (& likely inbetween) - Are the Trudeaus, the Turners, and their ilk not at the top of the (Liberal) food chain? How about the inventors of Twitter, Facebook & Goggle - are they "right wing"?

Generalizations are not helpful to the conversation.

You have a point, but only to a point. Wealth and power don't really honour partisan boundaries. In Canada where both major parties are close to center, it's still the rich that hold the rudder. In terms of left wing vs right wing philosophy, the left is more about "us" while the right puts the emphasis on "me". More often than not I hear conservatives scoff at terms like "The greater good" and "Globalism" as if they are evils to be avoided at all costs.

Globulism most certainly needs to be avoided. Unless you want a standard of living on par with Pakistan.

Sure, better healthcare for those who can afford it. What's next on the hit list, public education ?
Well, of course! America (and Canada) weren't built by public-school students.

If your parents don't love you enough pony up a few beads to get ya yer readin, ritin, and rithmetic, why should somebody else's parents pay for your unloveable ass?

You can scrub toilets, pick fruit, and clean up trash from the roadsides.

We have immigrants to do that. Canadians with no skills would rather spend their time protesting someone else having a job.

Everybody uses big words that have no meanings. As I demonstrated, the Canadians who hate "socialism" don't hate socialism at all when it provides their health care.

They all want more, more, more from government. Even the most rock-ribbed "conservatives" want more police, more infrastructure, and suchlike. Everybody wants more government employees. And every group wants more for itself at the expense of other groups.
