Ummmm...according to my research on purge debt and with help from credit coucelling Canada. Example: debt recorded as unpaid and (I)9 rating in year 2000, this debt is being collected by Portolio Man...year 2004.

"this debt will be on my record to year 2011" quote from Credit Councel Canada.

No trick just didn't collect EI and I didn't file a tax return for 6 years. once it was off I then filed taxes and got a huge refund - I didn't feel I owed them anything as I had paid into ei for 7 or 8 months out of the year and was entitled to benefits like anyone else.

You are da man:canada:Are you sure Govn't debts can be purged....I don't think so:angryfire: Can anyone quote on this:lol:

You can have a debt purged or reduced, but it is at the discretion of CRA.

CRA is not governed by th esame regulations that other debt collectors are - in fact, they can instantly seize your assets and never even talk to a court.

Contact your CRA officer and talk to them about how to apply for reduction or elimination. You have to fill out a bunch of forms and prove that you deserve the change, but it can happen.

I just went through it with my own CRA officer last year. That's when she told me a lot about how other collection agencies are allowed to operate etc.

Redpheonix..thanks for the respond:canada:I saw this newspaper clipping off the classified section and I will quote this below. I think who ever wrote this must be under the gun from Portfoilio Management Corp or the CRA:lol:

You Pissed Me Off!
Dear Luxury Car Driver or How the Elitist Bastard learns not everyone will kiss his or her Ass. It's sad that you believe you're entitled to a higher standard of courtesy than the "average" driver. Your pieve of **** BMW/Mercedes/Lexus/whatever the penis-compensating vehicle you drive, does not impress me. It does not make me want to slow down to let yur pompous ass merge into my lane & does not make me think you are of an higher importance than myself. Go ahead, force a merge, sideswipe me with your penis extension, you may have the right of weight(my, my, was that ever clever) but I have the right to de-flower your bank account at will. Here's a bit of advice, my overly self-absorted friend, give up now (feel free to pass this into on to Buffy & Tad next time your're chatting at the Country Club) there are more of us than there are of you, you'll never win.

Seeking an Answer.

Hi guys. New to this forum, but googled "Portfolio Management Canada Inc." and found you all.

Today I received a letter from these guys. I have NO clue who they are, but they are claiming its regarding an account with TD Canada Trust. The only dealings i have EVER had with TD was an old credit card I had back in 1996 which was long paid off (1999?) and cancelled on my end.

I have no clue what these guys are or what kind of scam they are playing. Not sure how to proceed with this. Just sat on the phone for 20 minutes (on hold) waiting for someone to pick up at TD Canada Trust. Its saying I owe $1500. Like i said, one credit card way back when i was in university with a credit limit of $500 (and COMPLETELY paid off).

Any suggestions?

Portfolio Management Canada Inc

I recently recieved a letter from Portfolio Management saying I owe money on a old credit card. It was a Canada Trust Mastercard from 1998 that I owed $600 on. I paid this off in full in 2003, but now am being told that I never paid it and with interest, I now owe $1,543.50. I explained that it was paid directly to Canada Trust after I recieved a letter from Collectcorp. Since my ex destroyed all my records when we broke up, I don't even have a confirmation of this. I contacted TD Canada Trust, and they are unable to give me any information regarding the account. Collectcorp informed me that the account was recalled from them two days after they recieved it, but other than that, no one can give me any information regarding this account. TD Canada Trust doesn't even deal with Mastercard anymore, only Visa. I have called and spoken to at least 20 different people trying to get the information on this account, but have not yet been successful. I am aware of the fact that there is a full disclosure law that states that if the debtor requests details on an account, they are entitled to complete disclosure. Not recieving it violates the Collections Act.
After I paid the amount, I didn't hear from anyone regarding it for over five years, which I don't understand. If I didn't pay off the account, why did they stop contacting me for so long. I lived at the same address for the entire time and still have the same telephone number. I feel that this company is pulling accounts that were once delinquent and are trying to get more money from them. Not only that, isn't there a seven year time limit on accounts? I defaulted on my payments in 1998, which is 10 years ago. It just seems very suspicious to me.

I have a few questions maybe somebody could help me. After University I applied for interest relief but never recieved the forms, immediately a company called Collect Corp. came after me for my unpaid student loans. I paid them in full and restored all my credit in 2005. In 2006 I started receiving calls from this PMCI company, I've tried calling them back only to get answering machines. Its not a recorded message they leave but an actual person, they only leave their first name and phone number, they never say the bussiness name, I had to do some searching from the phone number I have. I know I have no outstanding debt. I've checked credit reports, my accountant at income tax time checks for me with nothing ever coming up, etc. With Collect Corp. I was 'iffy' about paying them, it was a lot of money and they were pushy, rude and threatened me (I was young and didn't understand much of what was happening), however the thing that convinced me to pay was that I received statements for every payment and other papers explaining themsleves and the situation. Not once in 2 years has PMCI ever sent me anything in writting (they obviously know my address) I have never had any contact with them (except a message I left at the start of it). Should I try calling them again (and demand something in writting)? I don't want this to affect my future plans ie. buying a vehicle or house. stupid question: Collect Corp is a legitiment company, isn't it? thank you.

I actually worked for Collectcorp for awhile in the admin dept. They are a legitimate company. They are actually the largest collection agency in North America. I would contact them for the account information and ask for a statement detailing your payments. Once you recieve it, you will know for sure if the account is listed as completely paid. I am also recieving letters from PMCI regarding an account and am getting the run around from everyone. They only ones who didn't give me a hassle and answered my questions to the best of their ability were Collectcorp. I know some of the collectors there use scare tactics, but most of them are very young and making way too much money, which makes them think they are hot sh*t, (excuse my language, but this is collectors we are taking about). I dealt with them on a daily basis, (one of the reasons I left Collectcorp), and I can tell you, they are just as nasty to the people they work with. By the end of the day, at least one of my staff was in tears because of the collectors outbursts and temper tantrums. (They are like spoiled children who want their own way all the time).

As I said above, call them up and ask for a detailed statement of your account. The ones who deal with this side of it are actually very nice and helpful.

It sounds like you are going through the same thing I am. I had a mastercard with Canada Trust before they merged with TD. Now, no one there can give me any information on the account. I paid the $600 off in full, and now I am being told I owe them over $1500. Since the card had a limit of $500 (the extra was interest accrued before paying it off), I would like to know where they got this new amount. TD Canada Trust doesn't have the records anymore, and no one there can tell me anything. This card is from 1998 and I paid it off in 2001, so how is it they can try to collect now that it is 2008?? The first contact letter I recieved from them was on January 9, 2008, so I think there is only a bit of time left that they can legally collect. I have been sent a notice for a registered letter, but I never picked it up, I only spoke to them the one time, the day I recieved the initial letter, so I am just going to ride it out for now. I would like to find out how to contact the CRA, just to get more information so if there is anymore contact, I have some knowledge behind me.

Sounds Familiar

Looks like we are in the same boat. My wife had a TD Visa before we were married in 2002 and starting late last year PMCI started calling for $6000. They claim a payment was made in Sept 2002 (first they said Oct 2002). My wife cut up the card before we got together in 2001 and hasn't made any payments that we know of. Her bank records don't show the one in Sept 2002 that PMCI claims and TD Visa doesn't seem to be able to access the records (isn't that convenient 8O). We believe it is stat-barred (6 years in BC) and have not agreed to anything with PMCI. It wasn't on her credit report last year and all of a sudden just "appears" in October 6 years after the fact. Very frustrating!

Anyone had success pulling old TD Visa records and if so do you remember who helped?

I would get in touch with the credit reporting agencies and find out when that was put on her report. They have to provide a date of last activity on the account. You can dispute it and if they have done anything they cant do it would be removed. These idiots are really good at relisting old debts as new ones so they can put pressure on people and lots of times it works as a lot of people dont know they can dispute it.

Ok so I started getting phone calls from this company called Skylink Receivables Inc. They phoned my parents and the guy told them that he was an old friend and wanted to get in touch with me, they gave him my number. He told me that he was collecting for an old credit card. 4 years ago I was told by the credit card company and the collection agency at that time that the account was written off and that I would not have to pay it.

I told the guy from Skylink to send me documentation about the debt. This was written at the bottom of the letter “Skylink Receivables Inc is the authorized collection agency operating on the behalf of Portfolio Management Group’s debt purchase division, Portfolio Management Canada Inc. **

I also pulled this off of someone else’s post:
Debt Buying DivisionSpecializing in the distressed debt buying segment, Portfolio Management Group (PMG) purchases seemingly unrecoverable liabilities in exchange for instant revenue from a wide variety of clients. Currently, the largest debt buyer in Canada, we focus on utilizing our Signature Care methodologies to treat each customer with integrity and respect while providing rehabilitative payment solutions. All recovery activities are performed by our highly trained Account Representatives and are never sold to second party vendors. With this approach, you can be relieved of your in-house collection expenses and liabilities while remainingconfident that your customers will always receive quality service reflecting positively upon your organization.
This supposedly came from their website (which I can’t find). So if they never sell to second party vendors, why is this company calling me on a debt already closed?? Portfolio Management Group is not a member of the Better Business Bureau and they have had complaints against them to the BBB. I am starting to wonder if I should pay this at all.

Ive read a few of these posts and would make the following comments:

1. the statute of Limitations in Alberta is 2 years - not 7 years.
2. the statute of limitations in Ontario is now 2 years not 7 years (changed in Jan 2004)
3. For other provinces find out what the Limitation period is and do not deal with debts outside of that period - they are completely unenforceable and no longer exist legally - but you must tell them so - they are liars and theives and will lie to you at every opportunity.
3. there is no "defense" of collection agencies - by the time it gets to them the actions are mainly punative - they are not really designed to collect (the return to the creditor is miniscule on collection charge offs) but to damage you any way they can legally and to use it as an example as to why you should pay your bills.
4. this is all legal in canada, since our political system seems to support a victorian approach to credit - we are all equal untill we owe money that we cant pay back!

I purchased some furniture from The Brick under one of those special payment plans and started making payments. The Brick's financial is operated by Household Financial who then sold my account apparently to Portfolio Management. I recently received a letter in the mail from Portfolio saying I owe them over $10k and they are charging me 29.9% interest. The amount outstanding is starting to add up but I do not know how they came up with this amount. I called Portfolio to get data on the history of this amount as I thought The Brick account was paid in full and they told me to call The Brick. I have called The Brick and Household and they only thing they told me was the last payment on the account was June 2003 and as this is so old, the could not provide me with anything else.

I then called back Portfolio and they said that my account has now gone to legal to deal with and since I own a house, they are coming after my property to get a settlement but that the guy was willing to deal with me before it got to that point.

Being as the amount is large and they have threatened to get a lien on my house and I don't know what I owe if anything as I couldn't get any data from The Brick, what rights or possible course of action should I take? Help???

. They have to provide you with original proof of purchase and original application .Once they send that to you , you go from there. The threat tactics are amusing but they are only empty threats .The whole " gone to legal department"...nice line haha...ask to speak to there legal department.Get the name and number and qualifications of the legal representitive .But again , ask for the original proof of purchase and application. It is there resp. to provide you with these documents.Otherwise, they can't prove you owe anything to anybody. I have asked numerous times for these documents as far as contacting the so called original lender , even they have nothing. So if they can't provide you with this , then you owe nothing. This site has been great for me . Lots of good info , but I contacted my lawyer and was simply advised , " proof of purchase and application " they must provide .Hey those guys and gals of jobs to do , I understand that , but I think they hope most people don't know thier rights or get to know their rights .Most all retail purge their files every 5 years , so it could be very tuff to get original documents , which only sucks for them .Also contact credit burue and have them " applied to be removed ".if they are on there.Hell I even asked for their fraud dept and they don't have one .But yet they have a lady that deals with their fraud , she only has v-mail ???? No email ....it's 2008 ..they may not know that ...but with email they would have to watch thier backs because then you have a printed paper trail of conversations. Just research your rights .

..So Zales finally contacts me and says , " our records show " ZERO BALANCE AND NO FORWARD TO ANY COLLECTION AGENCY "...which I follow up with , umm well thats cause I never had an account ..they then email me with full contact info the same confirmation . So I call PMC, give them the info and say...yeah ...so Um you got your information where again??
A portion of the email ZALES sent me .
Re: Your Peoples Account (number ending in 2968)

The Zales Customer Care Department has contacted our office with reference to your e-mail they recieved on March 25, 2008.

Our investigation into the telephone call you received from a credit agency regarding an outstanding balance on the above mentioned Peoples account has confirmed the following. Your Peoples account has a zero balance. There are no records of any calls being made to you by our office regarding a balance owing on your account. Additionally, your account has not been assigned to a Collection Agency.

So how is it some place called PMC says I owe them 700 bucks from 1998 again??? Wow!!! The email says more , she wants contact info for PMC ...gave her the # and the people I have talked to ...messed up .....

Don't pay them ****. After reading the posts on these guys, they seem like scumbags. I applied for a mortgage last week and I only had this on my credit bureau. It took forever just to find a phone number for them. The date of last activity on the report said 09/03. I knew I hadn't paid in the last 6 yrs and it was stat barred. I called them and asked what the last payment date was and she said 04/02. Strange? Why would they report on my credit file 09/03?
I was told if I wanted to disput it, call Equifax. I want it gone, so I offered 50%. If it was older, I wouldn't pay but I don't want all the hassle.
If it's really old or you want to avoid it.Don't give them any info that they don't have. Don't write aknowledgement of the debt. If it's stat barred, ask them for last payment date. And, block your calls. If you want to settle a debt, get them to fax you a pre-release or Settlement letter. Then after you pay, get a release letter. If they paid pennies on the dollar for these accts, you should be able to settle for half. I did collections and skip tracing for years.
