Nanaimo
I have to agree with #juan, Nanaimo is a wonderful place to live and raise children. And as far as going to the mainland who needs it. I only go if I have to.

I have been to a few, I still like Halifax the most.

So your from Eastern Passage? I was a member at Hartlen Point golf club for a few years when I was growing up in Dartmouth. My mother and sister currently live in a house next to the refinery.

Saw the area last year on my first visit back there in about 19 years. At least it didn't seem to smell as bad as I'd remembered
Actully, the area near the Refinery is Woodside...I dont live there.

Eastern Passage starts right after CFB Shearwater.

I really find all the votes for Calgary a little strange.. I think you people just like the cheques from the province.

In my opinion the best cities in which to LIVE, in Canada, is either Toronto or Montreal.

Montreal has a really neat feel to it, kind of intimate. Privately owned coffee shops and deli's far out numbering the chains. Montreal gets almost every big name concert or entertainment event that enters Canada, nightlife is top of the line, no matter what your tastes are. Montreal also boasts a healthy community for any of the arts. It also has a very good selection of fields for employment, thanks in large part to all of the universities and colleges in the city.

While Montréal has all of this, it still comes short in nearly every category to Toronto; an AMAZING city to live in. the only thing you don't get from Toronto that you do get from Montréal is that intimate feeling, while yes it is there in parts of the city, sometimes in the city with 4.5 million you can feel a little detached, but if you do a "more intimate setting" is generally just around the corner. In Toronto you can do ANYTHING you want to do. There is a facility for everything. The Varity of shops is far greater than Montreal and every other city in Canada pales in comparison, there is a specialty shop for everything. Toronto has so many great communities, like the Dan fourth (Greek), or China Town no city in Canada comes close to the cultural diversity of the city. Not even New York offers a better selection of food, and the only thing Montreal has on Toronto in the food department is Schwartz's. (if you haven't been you HAVE to go - any cab driver can take you there for the BEST Montréal smoked meat). My suggestion in Toronto if you like Thai-fusion food is "Spring Rolls".

Toronto even has Montreal beat with the Jazz bars with Ally Katz, Reservoir Lounge, and The Rex.

If it is sports you are after Toronto is the place to be with a major sports team for nearly every sport.

Employment? - You can get a job doing anything in Toronto - WORLD CLASS schools, with leaders in near every field. In Toronto you can even make a living playing your guitar in the SUBWAY system and I KID YOU NOT!!.

Speaking of the subway, Toronto has done a pretty good job of keeping the whole city accessible without a car. If you are visiting and you don't by a pass, it CAN get a little expensive, but if you are smart you can get around Toronto pretty fast, and pretty cheap.

SO many people think Toronto is horrible for crime, what they don't understand is that 1 it is isolated crime, MOST and I do mean MOST violent crimes are committed by and too the lower class black population. but even still Toronto's crime rate is lower than Vancouver’s or Montréal’s.

The only reason people dislike Toronto is because they think that "Toronto" thinks it is the center of Canada... Well I have news for you folks, IT IS!

To sum it up, if you like city life (greater than 50000 or 75000) then you will love Toronto if you give it a try and live there for just a short time.

I didn't live there when the cheques were being handed out but I remember a clean, pretty city with lots to do and close to the mountains. I think it's pretty good.

The Capital
I've lived EVERYWHERE in Ontario, and I find OTTAWA is the NICEST place to live. Yes its a TAD dull here.. but it depends on your deffinition of "fun" I think. Now if you want to have "fun" go to Windsor. Thats fun, but its also dangerous because its basically a suburb of Detroit more then a Canadian city. Other then Ottawa, I'd have to say Vancouver is NICER and has a better "fun" scene then Ottawa does. And if I had a choice I'd live in Vancouver over Ottawa. But personally I feel those are the best two in Canada.. they are total flag ship cities imho.

The SHORT TIME I lived in Toronto was the most miserable of my life. I was there for 3 weeks (in 2004 I think it was) and happened to move in across the street from where that little girl was abducted and chopped in to pieces... remember that? I was questioned 4 times... as was the other 5 guys I lived with... it was frelling horrible. I'll NEVER go back to T.O. for anything for as long as I live. I hate that city in every way you can think of EXCEPT for its theator scene... and might be the ONLY thing that ever gets me there again... which is still very unlikely.

Anyways.. my two cents.

nah, those cheques don't even cover the monthly gas for our vehicles.

Although I would choose Calgary, I dislike the location, despite its proximity to the mountians. I prefer the climate of south Ontario, because I grew up across the river in Ohio. If Calgary was located somewhere warmer, even eastern BC, I woulden't complain.

In terms of cities I can't stand:

Ottawa is dull and dissapointing for a capitol city of a G8 nation.

Montreal seems to be drenched in pontification, and self-sufficient pride that ignores their financial statements.

Surprisingly I like Toronto, not only for its weather but its attitude, it reminds me of Chicago.

Was Victoria, now Ottawa
I've been all over Canada and would say Ottawa is the best. It's not dull. There are concerts all the time (bluesfest, jazzfest, folk festival, plus big name acts come all the time), bars, outdoor activities. Ottawa is a big city but you can bike to the country within half an hour. Bike up to the gatineau hills, Wakefield, it's awsome. People who complaine about Ottawa really aren't looking. Ottawa has it all. How can you be bored here?
I've lived in Victoria and it's beautiful. But once the tourist season is over there isn't much to do. At least you can bike all year round (except for that three months of rain in the winter).

Pointy Rocks
I don't like to live in cities, my backyard is a soybean field.
I live near Windsor and I can say it is neither fun nor clean nor friendly. It's dirty and filled with drunken 19 year old americans. The art scene sucks. Jobs suck. Dirty little turd of a city with the smog of millions of vehicles.
So my vote is Toronto. It's a great world class city with everything to do. I'm just glad I don't live there (too many peoplebut I do like to visit.

Toronto is an awsome city to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Too many people, too much traffic, and too much smog. But it's fun. And there is always something to do.

Toronto is definately a city I enjoy visiting. Forget the politics...... when you look at its future it is very bright as far international cities go. I believe metropolitan Toronto is top 10 in the world in terms of GDP, which is impressive.

How come nobody voted for Deadmonton

Talk about a city with no character whatsoever. I have spent the last 8 years of my life here and I'm so happy to leave it.

My choices would be Vancouver and my hometown Quebec City.
