While I understand the risk to pregnant women, etc. This is a bit of an overkill. When the real killer virus hits, people will ignore the WHO.
Although I somewhat agree. I can empathise with people in South America.

I'm sure while we enjoy relative safety here, this is quite a scary thing for people in South America.

Do you know if Zika can be transmitted by the many varieties of mosquitoes in Canada, by biting a Zika infected person, and then biting a non-infected person?

My feelings are not location based. If the mosquitoes were here, I would still feel the same way. If I was a woman who was pregnant or planning to become pregnant, I would want to take a lot of precautions. This seems be dressed as the next Ebola based upon WHO actions. It's not. Maybe the next West Nile (another complete non-event).

Neither are mine. My point being this is likely very important to people in South America.

Yes, because as we all know, the majority of South Americans are rolling in dough and can afford to take all precautions. Especially since it's an area renowned for its use of contraception.

Ummm, while I agree, west nile was a non issue, I don't think there were any devastating birth defects associated with it.

Well, now you have moved onto a different issue. Nothing to do with WHO worldwide alerts rather a certain churches position on contraception. Perhaps if one tackles the real issue then one wouldn't need WHO worldwide alerts for a lame virus which precautions should be able to be taken. As for rolling in dough, how much extra does it cost to cover up if one is pregnant or planning to become pregnant?

It seemed really big when it first came out. Lots of advertising. I would have to check if there was a WHO alert on it.

No, I just looked at all the factors.

Don't know, I've never tried to live in, or like the residents of, a favela.

I remember the hype to. After reading about it, it was no big deal. Microcephaly seems like a pretty big deal, as opposed to the sniffles.

It is a big deal .... if you are pregnant or about to be pregnant .. or connected to a pregnant or about to be pregnant woman. Otherwise, not so much.

We seem to have differing opinions on this. I am ok with leaving it at that as I find most people (myself included) rarely change ones opinions (assuming all facts are known).

On that narrow scope, I agree.

Fair enough. I'm following the story as best I can, I'm very interested to see if the disease can be transferred by other species of mosquito, from one host to another. Especially since the Olympics are headed that way.

The only interesting complication is there was a case in Texas where it was transmitted by sex. As sex is usually the first step in pregnancy, this means the expected father has a role in this as well.

I saw that on a notification on FB, I dismissed it as a hoax. I'll have to go check that out.

Re: Zika Virus

Here are the facts so far before we preemptively decide the potential of this outbreak (ie Boomer Ebola Gate)

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.

In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infection in Brazil. The outbreak in Brazil led to reports of Guillain-Barre syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes.

In response, CDC has issued a travel alert (Level 2-Practice Enhanced Precautions) for people traveling to regions and certain countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing

Where has Zika virus been found?

Prior to 2015, Zika virus outbreaks have occurred in areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands.

In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infections in Brazil.

Currently, outbreaks are occurring in many countries.

Zika virus will continue to spread and it will be difficult to determine how the virus will spread over time.

Prevention

No vaccine exists to prevent Zika virus disease (Zika).

Prevent Zika by avoiding mosquito bites (see below).
Mosquitoes that spread Zika virus bite mostly during the daytime.
Mosquitoes that spread Zika virus also spread dengue and chikungunya viruses.
When traveling to countries where Zika virus or other viruses spread by mosquitoes are found, take the following steps:

Use insect repellents
When used as directed, insect repellents are safe and effective for everyone, including pregnant and nursing women.
Most insect repellents can be used on children. Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus in children under the age of three years.
Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide long lasting protection.

If you use both sunscreen and insect repellent, apply the sunscreen first and then the repellent.

Do not spray insect repellent on the skin under your clothing.

Treat clothing with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated clothing.

Always follow the label instructions when using insect repellent or sunscreen.
When weather permits, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

Use air conditioning or window/door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. If you are not able to protect yourself from mosquitoes inside your home or hotel, sleep under a mosquito bed net.

Help reduce the number of mosquitoes inside and outside your home or hotel room by emptying standing water from containers such as flowerpots or buckets

Valuable information and knowledge about this viral infection.

Another bird flu.

He is telling you: it is a mild viral infection transmitted by mosquito, and it is not like the dangerous bird flu.

Although I somewhat agree. I can empathise with people in South America.

Wow! Now, I know you are genius, like your kindred Einstein.

it needs to be translated by al hillabilly.
I didn't think someone could be that dumb, but there it is. selfsame brings dumb to a whole new level.

Now, I know why you tell people: you are idiot and that one is idiot; because Einstein is your kindred.
