President Donald Trump’s sweeping crackdown on undocumented immigrants will strain an already tight U.S. job market, with one study suggesting that removing all of them would cost the economy as much as $5 trillion over 10 years.

That represents the contribution of the millions of unauthorized workers to the world’s largest economy, about 3 percent of private-sector gross domestic product, according to a recent paper issued by the National Bureau of Economic Research. At an average of $500 billion in output a year, removing all such immigrants would be like lopping off the equivalent of Massachusetts from the U.S. economy, said study co-author Francesc Ortega.

“It’s a big number,” said Ortega, an economics professor at Queens College in New York, who published the study in November with colleague Ryan Edwards. “Undocumented workers are present across the whole economy, even if they are heavily concentrated in sectors such as agriculture, construction and hospitality.”

This will likely be made up in large part by increasing domestic product manufacturing and elimination of outsourcing jobs to other countries, another major piece in his promised mandate. Also, this number seems to focus completely on jobs and GDP, and disregards social and infrastructure costs involved to support all the undocumented aliens.

The price of a Mar-a-lago membership is going to go through the roof.... again.
The price of everything is going to go through the roof. At least if Donald gets his way. Hopefully the Republicans will stop him

Manufacturing output has doubled in the United States since NAFTA. Trump wants to undo NAFTA. The man's a moron and so are his supporters

That describes a Trump voter to a T. Protectionism for those who can't compete in the international open market because they think they're so entitled to their jobs that they need the US government to at least try to bully businesses to move back to the US.

That is the idea. But to go along with it is to make welfare recipients take those jobs. As long as there are unemployed citizens there is no reason for illegals or migrants to work in the US. Just how to make entitled generational welfare recipients take low pay jobs and perform like the Mexicans do is where theory and reality are going to collide.

Yes, because all those Michigan folks will line up to do the jobs the illegals have been doing.

I wonder if Eaglesmack even has any experience picking lettuce.

Of course there is. Just because you don't understand the reasons, doesn't mean there aren't reasons

You honestly believe that one swaps out for the other? Trump really bamboozled you, didn't he?

Yeah. Right. All of those laid off steel workers in Allentown PA are going to be cleaning toilets in Amarillo, TX while pigs fly over in formation.

Sorry, but you can't legislate unskilled workers out of the labour market by raising the minimum wage and then blame them for not being able to find work... or at least legal work that doesn't pay below the table to circumvent minimum wage laws.

So, do you want then to work illegally or go by the book and apply for social assistance? With the minimum wage in place, take your pick.
