UK press locked out of White House over birthdate snafu

British journalists were apparently locked out of the White House on Friday amid confusion over the United Kingdom-style formats of their birthdates.

Unlike in the United States, where the month appears ahead of the day and year, most European dates are written with the day first, followed by the month and then year.

Several members of the press from across the pond tweeted about the apparent mixup, which came about an hour before British Prime Minister Theresa May was to appear at a White House press conference alongside President Trump.

The only unambiguous way to write a date is YYYY/MM/DD.

Writing it the American way is a bit daft.

The British say 27th January 2017 - "the 27th (day) of January 2017" - which makes perfect since.

The Americans say January 27th 2017 - "January (the) 27th 2017 - which makes no sense at all.

2017/01/27 is clear. It can also be properly sorted as a string if so desired and maintain the proper order.

02/04/2017 is what date? (without knowing who you are speaking to.)

The second one is 2nd April in Britain and most of the rest of the Anglosphere and 4th February in America.

But requires you to know the context of who you are talking to. Here in Canada, we get both forms so no guarantee.

2017/04/02 for April 2nd.
2017/02/04 for February 4th.
