Trump risks major diplomatic dispute with China after speaking with Taiwan president

Donald Trump risks opening up a major diplomatic dispute with China before he has even been inaugurated after speaking on the phone on Friday with Tsai Ying-wen, the president of Taiwan.

The telephone call, confirmed by three people, is believed to be the first between a US president or president-elect and a leader of Taiwan since diplomatic relations between the two were cut in 1979.

Although it is not clear if the Trump transition team intended the conversation to signal a broader change in US policy towards Taiwan, the call is likely to infuriate Beijing which regards the island as a renegade province.

The US has adopted the so-called “One China” policy since 1972 after the Nixon-Mao meetings and in 1978 President Jimmy Carter formally recognised Beijing as the sole government of China, with the US embassy closing in Taipei the year after.

The Trump team did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

“The Chinese leadership will see this as a highly provocative action, of historic proportions,” said Evan Medeiros, former Asia director at the White House national security council.

“Regardless if it was deliberate or accidental, this phone call will fundamentally change China’s perceptions of Trump’s strategic intentions for the negative. With this kind of move, Trump is setting a foundation of enduring mistrust and strategic competition for US-China relations.”

Yes, best not expect anything intelligent from him. Could I at least ask for a few conservative ideas once in a while?

As I've said, you can't seem to wrap your head around what is left wing and what is right wing. I fear diplomacy is a little above you

Good for him. Taiwan is the real government of China anyway.

I am not supporting Trump but I do detest hypocrites.

But first this thought……

Taiwan's president is the First Woman in office, elected on a platform including expanding gay rights, the most liberal in all of Asia. China is a marxist dictatorship.

Despite strong opposition from China, the Obama administration authorized a $1.83 billion weapons sale to Taiwan Wednesday, marking the first U.S. arms shipment to the island in four years.

But the timing of the sale comes amidst heightened tensions between the U.S. and China due to recent Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The campaign team of Hillary Clinton, the U.S. presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, will come to Taiwan to raise funds in September for her campaign activities, according to her official website. The fundraiser will take place in Taipei on Sept. 7. But only U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are allowed to attend, and participants will be asked to provide documentation of their U.S. passport or green card, the information on the website said.

This is because the U.S. Federal Election Campaign Act "prohibits any foreign national from contributing, donating or spending funds in connection with any federal, state, or local election in the United States, either directly or indirectly."

China complains that Trump accepting a call from Taiwan could hurt relations with the U.S. Well that's bloody tough!
Here's what the media is saying.

It break decades old tradition. Big deal! 'Reagan did it that way', 'Bush did it that way', 'Clinton did it that way'. But remember, when they were President China was not as much of a threat as it is today.

China has close relations with U.S. allies. Irritating China will cause friendly relations to break down. They fail to mention that China also has close relations with North Korea which is also a major threat.

China has shown contempt for the U.S. for quite a while now. They appear to be looking for a confrontation. Remember when they snubbed Obama by not properly greeting him when he arrived there? U.S. didn't launch a formal complaint. Foreign countries have been treating U.S like a weak country because of Obama. Obama never reproached them for anything they said or did. So like all bullies those countries get bolder.

Every one slams Trump for being friendly with Russia. Russia and China are NOT friendly toward each other. I think if the U.S. makes a choice, they should be closer to Russia for they might need the Russians help when China gets too aggressive.

Countries are acting snobbish. It's like an elite club where you can only associate with friends of your friends friends. You can't associate with any who aren't approved by the 'elite'.
China is acting like a little kid, 'if you are going to talk to them you can't be OUR friend'.

I think Trump should call the Chinese President (or whoever the big boss is) and ask him what the hell his problem is. Then, as President launch a formal complaint against China for not reigning in North Korea from their mad obsession with nuclear weapons.

The US is sending them more than $1B in arms to be used against China in a war. I would think that would interest China more than a phone call. It could have been he was dusting off that speed-dial button and accidentally pressed it. It could happen, then what, hang up without saying anything??? Let's try and stay in the adult world for a change.

So you would go to war over Obama not using the right exit on the plane?? That's pretty f*cked up IMO.
How has sticking to their side of the globe a threat to the security of the US??

The US does huge trade agreements with Taiwan and sells them billions in US arms and weapons. Why shouldn't he talk to them? They are a trade partner.

I hear they will be looking for a new batch shortly. Maybe we should partner up and you can keep me in line.
