(CNSNews.com) - Government employees in the United States outnumber manufacturing employees by 9,932,000, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Federal, state and local government employed 22,213,000 people in August, while the manufacturing sector employed 12,281,000.

The BLS has published seasonally-adjusted month-by-month employment data for both government and manufacturing going back to 1939. For half a century—from January 1939 through July 1989—manufacturing employment always exceeded government employment in the United States, according to these numbers.

The Govt should buy robots like manufacturers did. Robots don't get union wages, bennys or pensions and work 24/7.

Interesting. In Canada, government workers have a 9.7 percent wage premium over the public sector, plus much better benefits. Canada has 20.4% of it's workforce working for the government; 64.3 in the private sector and 15.3 self employed. The fastest increase has been in the government sector and will increase exponentially in the next few years. Hiring criteria's are very different in the two sectors.

Manufactoring has been declining since the Reagan era. Obama admin has shown some improvement.

Manufacturing workers can't keep up generating enough wealth to carry all of the government workers, who produce none, anymore. We're well beyond the tipping point. They mostly leech off of the resource extraction sector, now.

It's because corporations sent all the manufacturing jobs to the sweat shops of Asia.
Not any mystery why this is. Ah, but the headline is so juicy and self righteous inducing
that the righties just lap it up.
If you want to fix the problem make your right wing companies bring the jobs back.
Which is it? You want a toaster for $15.88 on a roll back or do you want a fukking job?

Everyone knows that gubmints produce wealth.

Dumb unimaginative troll post. lol.

Unfortunately they do just that snd there are more green IOUs in circulation now than real wealth to cover them.

Interesting comment because government employees are at the forefront of anti resource extraction protests.

That was largely because the workers wanted wages comparable to government employees which simply isn't sustainable.

Rule of thumb back in the old days in the custom cabinet business is that an employee should produce 5 times his salary for the company. No idea how they would gauge a government workers salary. I do know that garbage collectors made more than journeyman carpenters. Go figure.

Well yes they should so that no one has a job. Of course then some will whine why people aren't working, or will they be classified as lazy......?

Walmart plans to shed about 7,000 store accounting and invoicing positions as the company moves to automate those processes, though workers will be offered positions elsewhere in their stores, the company confirmed Thursday.
