Mississippi House did pass a bill (HB 132), nicknamed the "Jesus Take the Wheel Act", that would exempt churches from commercial driver's license requirements:

"This just allows small churches, some don't have people with commercial licenses at all, and they can pick a person to drive the bus," said state Rep. Robert Johnson III, D-Natchez, who chairs the Transportation Committee which had passed the bill earlier in the session. Current law requires CDL-certified drivers for any vehicle transporting more than 16 passengers, including the driver. The bill would amend that law to exempt church buses designed to carry 30 passengers or less.

This is an outrage. There needs to be a protest . This type of heinous activity cannot continue. What in the world makes these people think they can go forth with this type of debauchery. I'll not stand for it. I'll take it to the highest court in the land. Right after my afternoon nap.

In Ontario I've never heard of needing a commercial license to volunteer to drive people to the pols on voting day....
What is good enough foe the government should be good enough for the church.....

Don't worry. The litigation after the first accident should take care of it.

In Ontario you need to prove you can drive a bus by qualifying for your bus licence......

A Class B licence lets you drive a school bus with seating for more than 24 passengers. It also allows you to drive vehicles covered by C, D, E, F and G class licences.

A Class E licence lets you drive a school bus with seating for up to 24 passengers. It also allows you to drive vehicles covered by F and G class licences.

I was talking about using a car to shuttle voters....
Although until a couple of years ago I did have My bus licence be cause I thought when I retired that I might do that to pass the time butI started going to festivals after I retired, and never did get around to driving bus, so the next time I renewed my license, I dropped it because I would have had to go for a physical and pay another $25 for that slip from the doctor etc.
So I downgraded to GM.....dunno why I kept the M since I haven't driven a trail bike in 15 years....but it's not costying me anything to keep it.................

Has to do with the number of passengers. This law is a rather stupid and unsafe idea because it will allow inexperienced drivers get behind the wheel of a bus.

in Ontario you have to pass a driving test and understand the laws of the road for buses and multi passenger vehicles

in busy cities this piece is important, you are right

After rereading the article....you're right ...the certification procedure is almost exactly the same as ontario, and the bill intends to do away with it..

and to drive a 45ft class A diesel pusher you only need a standard drivers license. There is nothing special about driving a "bus", especially when we are talking about those with standard brakes and not air brakes.

I think the law is stupid. Having inexperienced people driving a bus is stupid however, we let bubba work on the farm all his life, retire, but a 300 foot motorhome and drive it across the country without any training or test. My real issue though, is why a church is different than the local seniors home or 4H club.

Indeed.

I would support this law if it came with a no-sex-on-the-bus rider.
