A story to watch

Last summer IRS Commissioner John Koskinen testified under oath that the IRS did not have backup records of Lois Lerner's missing emails, and that they could not be recovered.

Last Thursday,
...under questioning from (Oversight Committee Chairman Jason) Chaffetz, (Deputy Inspector General Timothy) Camus said it took him only two weeks to track down the backup tapes, and when he asked the IRS depository for them, the workers there said they'd never been contacted by the agency itself.
The IRS is now being investigated for criminal misconduct.

This is the sort of thing you'd expect in a banana republic:
The Department of Justice blocked an attempt to force the Internal Revenue Service to search for Lois Lerner's missing emails at off-site storage facilities, according to a lawyer pushing to obtain the emails.
The IRS never looked for Lerner's backup email tapes at the West Virginia storage facility where they were being housed. Treasury deputy inspector general Timothy Camus told Congress that the IRS never asked IT professionals at the New Martinsville, W.V. storage site for the backup tapes. Camus only found the backup tape for Lerner's missing 2011 emails about two weeks ago.
But the Obama administration knew that emails were stored at off-site facilities, and even shut down a legal request to send somebody to go look for them.

There are two issues at play here. One is the potentially illegal conduct of the IRS. It should be investigated and the guilty parties made to atone. The second is the targeting of specific groups. It would appear that the US government is taking a page out of the Canadian government's playbook (or vice versa). I must say, it's funny to see the hypocrites dance.

Here is the difference: Canada is investigating organizations that may be abusing their tax-free status, and Canada is doing so in an above-board legal manner.

The IRS is denying tax-free status along ideological lines in a completely illegal and under handed manner.

People can justify their hypocrisy in all sorts of ways.

Try not to be an idiot just for once.

One is an investigation of people illegally ripping off the taxpayer.

The other is the state illegally trying to suppress legitimate opposition.

Lerner is a member of the Obama team and as such has now been given the decision that she will not be prosecuted. (Wink)

So far Lerner is ahead 1-0. She retired and got her "Valued Performance" bonus too. I'll bet nothing comes of this. Another example of the multi tiered US system of justice.
