even if you don't want to read the article the byline gives a hint which has nothing to do with size or population. On taxes, don't higher taxes make life worse for everyone........?

That's why they call it German efficiency.

What America had it lost, and it's not getting it back

Germany has somehow managed to create a high-wage, unionized economy without shipping all its jobs abroad.

Why Germany has it so much better than the US

which fits with the ranking of Germany (and European countries, in general) within the UN Inequality Adjusted Human Development Index:
The Human Development Index (HDI) represents a national average of human development achievements in the three basic dimensions making up the HDI: health, education and income. Like all averages, it conceals disparities in human development across the population within the same country. Two countries with different distributions of achievements can have the same average HDI value. The Inequality Adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI) takes into account not only the average achievements of a country on health, education and income, but also how those achievements are distributed among its citizens by “discounting” each dimension’s average value according to its level of inequality.

Germany is doing well but they are also dependent upon the rest of the EU as an export market. Look at France, Italy, and now Greece which should have been left to bankruptcy is headed there again.
Germany has been carrying the EU along with all that debt.

Is that the same Germany which has just narrowly avoided going back into recession by recording just 0.1% growth in the third quarter?

Oh yeah, they got it good..

If you like frost bite..

vs. Florida

If hot temperature were an indictator of great wealth and booming economic perfomance then Chad would be wealthier than Norway and Finland and Canada would be a Third World nation. You have to rmemeber that much of the US has been hit by an ice storm with much of the country lying under 15ft of snow.

Many people have criticised HDI, saying it is highly unreliable.

By the way, if I could choose between being in a quaint, medieval European town complete with snow and traditional Christmas market, or being in Florida or California, at this time of year I'd choose the quaint, medieval European town complete with snow and traditional Christmas market.

Germany isn't as shiny and pretty and efficient as some think. There are real Germans (West) and not real Germans (East) who are considered the Countries welfare recipients. There is a huge influx of Russian and former Eastern block immigrants who are taxing the system and fueling anti immigrant sentiment.

there's more to life than digging sand out of your crack, yes?

Free booze.

Have to wonder why so many Germans are desperately trying to get into Canada if things are so good at home. Probably never saw the graph that proves how good they have it.
