In today's Washington Post, George Takei, the actor who played Mr. Sulu in the original Star Trek, and who has been pretty public about being gay for the last ten years or so, reflects on the Supremes' decisions in the DOMA and Prop 8 cases (link below). It's a sensible, intelligent editorial, and amongst other things, Mr. Takei notes that the original Star Trek featured the first interracial kiss ever shown on American television, between Capt. Kirk and Lt. Uhura, in 1968.

All I could think of was "Hey, Sulu, bet you're glad it took another 40 years for gay rights to become a serious issue, or Shatner woulda been sucking your face!"

The man is pure class: dignity, humour, intelligence. Mr. Sulu, the steady, competent, quiet officer, was a role he fit into naturally.
