Here is something I just saw on the news - Americans considering moving to Canada to escape Obama, not realizing that if Obama was a Canadian politician he would be to the right of most Canadians on many of his policies. They also apparently do not realize that Obomacare is a weaker version of Canadian medicare, that gay marriage is common, that there is no death penalty, and that gun ownership is greatly restricted.

Americans Moving To Canada: The Twitter Trend That Never Dies

Interestingly, there was similar interest in moving to Canada when G.W. Bush was elected, but by supporters of the Democrats instead of the Republicans.

Basically I have absolutely nothing against Americans but I think I'd prefer to see the ones move here who like Obama! Nicer people!

I can't help but feel like this trend is sparked by and large by the internet traffic laughing at the idea, and not by any mass of conservatives actually considering it. Comedy sites are just as big a reason for the google traffic as are real intentions.

The other option is that people are trying to escape not the politics, but the demographic. Most Americans are aware of how 'socialist' we are. But, we're still pretty darn white

I dunno. I have some fundie Christian relatives in the U.S. who've been posting, apparently seriously, on Facebook about moving to Canada because the vote was "liberal liberal liberal," as one of them put it. I think Canada would be a terrible shock to them if they really did move here. They're in Washington state, which had an item on the ballot about same sex marriage, and they're clearly taking an Old Testament view of that. But I'm pretty sure they won't move, they're just bitching, it'll pass.

The only American friends (on fb) I have are democrat, so I really had no experience with this. thanks for sharing. I'd be curious to hear the thinking behind that. Odd.

It's a sad day when an entire country mobilizes against you and your idiotic tweet on Twitter.

But that's what happened to 18-year-old Kristen Neel when she tweeted a Donald Trump-esque rant that was so stupid she had to delete her account.

This is what started the firestorm:

Sadly, Kristen couldn't take the heat and deleted her account, but I'm going to give her a little bit of credit, she knew how to spell Australia and understood the difference between "their" "there" and "they're."

The only problem is Australia doesn't have a President, they have a Prime Minister.

And she's a woman.

And she's an atheist.

And she lives with her unmarried partner.

And she is extremely pro-choice. Oh—and Australia has socialized healthcare.

Whoops! Maybe Kristen wasn't taught geography since her Republicans are hell bent on destroying our public schools? I thought perhaps she meant Austria but that guy is an agnostic. Double Whoops!

Needless to say, Australians let her know exactly what they thought and it was the Best. Twitter. War. Ever.

Some of my favorites:

I feel sorry for @KristenNeel_. USA, may I suggest more funding to Public Education to avoid another Twitter-tragedy in 4 years time. @ki_sekiya

.@KristenNeel_ our "president" is a prime minister, is a woman, and is an atheist. I think you meant Antarctica. Move there. @post_rock0

@KristenNeel_ Apparently, that isn't going to work out the way you'd like. Why not try Canada, where a Mormon polar bear runs the show? @karj

@McTickster @KristenNeel_ Also she's an actual socialist, not a made up "Obama is a socialist" socialist. @GoatmealCrisp

I'm thinking @KristenNeel_ is going to be a Fox anchor one day. @Judes_****ey

Maybe...just maybe it's not loser Obama or ******* Republicans they are running from but employment and prosperity that they are running to.

Why is everything on these boards politically motivated?

Ironic, ain't it?

NEP shooed-away the oil/gas folks (and money) in the 70s and 80s; and now there's an opportunity that there may be a slight shift North.

Anyone who doesn't see the migration Northward as inevitable, is blind as a bat.

It takes a big set of balls to pack up and seek out a better life.

If some people in E. Canada don't have those balls then it will be Americans with balls who make the trek Northward and take the opportunity abandoned by the small balled Canadians.

I was thinking along the same lines myself, JLM. It is not as if we don't have are own share of wingnuts but they are Canadian wingnuts - hence they are for the most part rather laid back ....and they don't tend to get IN YOUR FACE with million dollar ads.

Maybe because it's a 'Politics' titled message board.........

She could have meant Austria. She'd still be wrong...just less wrong.

Heinz Fischer is an agnostic Fischer has been married since 1968. The couple has two grown children. Fischer enjoys mountaineering and has been president of the Austrian Friends of Nature for many years.

Conservatives are NOT planning on moving to Canada from the USA.

You are 100% correct.

And any CONServatives mouthing these sentiments is roundly laughed at because except for a few hell holes around the world, not many fit their vision.

The whole Move to canada premise was from Non-CONServatives in the USA who didn't want to live for 4 more years under Bushie. It resulted in a book titled ; 'Wait, Don't move to Canada'; stay and change things..........

In short, he knows his stuff. Bill has written a book, Wait! Don't Move to Canada: A Stay-And-Fight Strategy to Win Back America
, and its a dandy. It is a practical guide to how to make your voice heard, whether blogging, writing letters to the editor, or other political activism. He asks us to promote the three R's of Liberalism. A Liberal government is one that is representative, one where all our voices are heard not just those with the money. A liberal government is one that is responsive. It knows what to do when faced with a disaster like Katrina. And finally a liberal government is one that is responsible. It acknowledges mistakes when they happen and then fixes them. His book is a call to arms, and Bill provides the know how and the tools. So don't despair, don't move to Canada, buy Bill's book instead, and remember the mantra representative, responsive, and responsible.

Why are they confused? Is it because they don't know where it is?

Lol. Huge stereotype, I know, but I couldn't resist. :):):)

Having lived and spent a lot of time visiting friends and family, the short answer is YES.

Basically 10 minutes south of the 49th they don't know and most likely can't name the capital city of the state next to them, no matter how many there are..........It is quite stunning actually and I have experienced it 95% of the time when I have been there..........The videos below while appearing humorous are not the exception..........

I agree. This is more about people talking through their hats than anything else. It would be funny though if a few of the Romney types showed up in Canada only to discover they'd stepped into the equivalent of Republican Hell.
