YouTube has its own format of video file (any uploaded video is automatically converted) thats what makes it work so well.
You can't actually download the video files, although there are a couple of download (or capture) programs, like TubeHunter that can save files like YouTube. But I have found these programs to be full of glitches and bugs, and when they do work, the final saved file is such poor quality that it really isn't worth it!
Another method is using a Screen Capture program (that handles video). These work a little better to capture the images as they appear right on your screen, you can isolate (or crop) out a section of your screen (ie the video itself) rather than "film" the entire screen. Unfortunately these require a lot of trial and error learning how to use the programs and successfully "record" a worthwhile video.

Best thing to do, is to search for the video in a avi, mpeg, or other format, on another site where you can save or download the file. Trust me, all YouTube videos started out as other formats, sometimes already on the net, on other sites.

I have two main methods. I either use the plugin i've got in firefox for downloading videos from websites, which results in a .flv file, which i can then re-encode as an mpg or avi, or I use the new version of realplayer I have, which downloads files in a similar way... I haven't yet tried that one but I suspect it will also give flv files.

yeah bouby, hermantrudde is right about the flv thingy coz most YT videos are flash-based...but if you insist, bro..you can also go to keepvid.com and paste the URL of the YouTube video you wanna keep and it does the rest by keeping it as an flv file which you can later save in your C drive.

good news is, it works great on Windows but doesn't on a mac...
