Engineer Designs Cabin That Can Detach Itself From An Aircraft In An Emergency

“Around a third of people suffer from some level of anxiety when it comes to air travel, with even the most cool-headed of travelers often needing a stiff drink before a long flight. But would you feel any more comfortable flying if your plane was installed with this new “safety system” design?

Ukrainian aviation engineer Vladimir Tatarenko has been working for over three years on this project to make air travel safer.

His patented idea involves having a separate passenger cabin that is able to detach from the engine, wings and cabin in the event of an accident. Once the cabin is released, it will then deploy a parachute to lower it to the ground.

The cabin’s design also includes storage space, so cargo and passenger luggage as remains safe, The Independent reports.

He told LiveLeak, “Surviving in a plane crash is possible. While aircraft engineers all over the world are trying to make planes safer, they can do nothing about the human factor.”

As LiveLeak reported, commercial airlines haven’t shown much interest in his idea, as it would up prices, reduce seating capacity, and use more fuel.

Additionally, despite high-profile accidents over the past few decades, air travel remains safer than you think. In 2014 – the year of the MH370, MH17, Air Algerie 5017 and AirAsia QZ8501 flight catastrophes – there were just 10 accidents per million commercial jet departures.” said iflscience.com

Wonderful idea, but don't expect the airlines to buy into it. A bombproof luggage compartment for aircraft was designed years ago, but no aircraft manufacturer has bothered with it due to the increased cost. Similarly fuel storage chambers that would prevent or slow down aircraft fires were invented decades ago, but again due to costs none have ever been installed in a non-military aircraft. When it comes to building aircraft safety often takes a back seat to lower costs of construction.
