Sorry to bother everyone but I've been having a slew of technical difficulties lately. :-( First the problem with the audio on the PC and now this...

My external Samsung 100GB hard drive dropped on the floor this morning and just now I was trying to read some documents from it and both my Mac and PC doesn't read it and I hear this odd clicking noise. Its spinning but the disk doesn't read. I'm really afraid that I lose the data in there because all my precious scripts, WMV files, and proposals are backed up in there. I've already lost all the data on my PC due to the reformat, I hope now it's not going to hit my hard disk too...geez!

I tried opening it up and readjusting the plate that hooks up to the hard disk but no difference. I'm thinking it's in the hard disk itself but I don't have any tools to unscrew it and check.

Any suggestions before I bring it over to see a technician about it?

Four hour download from the web. Yet now I have an extra 666 applications to learn about and after checking some out, I wish that I had left it as I bought it. At least it did what I wanted to do. Now it's back to the beginning. Free can be `too good to be true` or a `pita`.

As working with PowerPoint somedays, I have found some PowerPoint tips and tricks. I write this how to embed a YouTube video into a PowerPoint slide and how to share a PowerPoint presentation on YouTube. If anyone has some good advices please tell me

Part one: Embedding YouTube video into the PowerPoint presentations

YouTube video is encoded in FLV format, while PowerPoint just accepts Mpeg, AVI, MOV and WMV video files. So we must convert the FLV format to Mpeg, AVI, MOV or WMV formats. There are two ways for you to convert it.

The first way is using the Online FLV Converter http://vixy.net. You can directly paste the YouTube video URL in the blank, choose the format you like and then click start, after the conversion finished, download it to your computer and then you can insert the video in your PowerPoint presentation

This tool is totally free but it is very slow and sometimes it can not finish the conversion because of some error information. Hope you are lucky!

The second way is using some professional tool like YouTube downloader. This tool can help you download the YouTube video and convert it. When you open a YouTube video, it can download the video automatically. You can find it at http://www.dvd-ripper-software.com/youtube-downloader.html. Open YouTube downloader, then main interface shows (see the illustration below). Click the “+” button to paste your YouTube URL in the blank, and then click OK.

After you finishing downloading you can see your video in the left “categories”. Click “play” to view the downloaded video. But the most important thing we must do is converting our FLV video. Now click “Convert” and choose a proper format. AVI and WMV are recommended

Save the converted file to you computer, then you can embed YouTube video to PowerPoint presentation now!

Another way to show your YouTube video on your PowerPoint presentation is give a link in your presentation but it has a limitation of your network connection. When you play your presentations you must connect to the Internet.

Part two: PowerPoint to YouTube

You may have gorgeous photo albums or business presentations created by PowerPoint that want to be shared online. Now you need PowerPoint to YouTube to convert PowerPoint presentation to video clips ready for YouTube or MySpace. Here I also introduce two ways for you to make a reference.

Using Windows Movie Maker (WMM). It’s free and it comes installed on XP and Vista. In your PowerPoint program save your presentation as JEPG format and then you can make a movie with WMM. You can also insert some transitions and sounds into it to make your movie more dynamic. But the disadvantage is the animations and sound synchronizations originally exist in your presentation will be discarded completely. If your presentation does not contain animations and transitions and sound, WMM is competent in doing this job. But if not, here’s the second way for you.

Using PPT to YouTube. You will find it at
http://www.ppt-to-dvd.com/powerpoint-to-youtube-overview.html. It is more convenient and easy to create compelling video presentations with PowerPoint to YouTube with this little creature. Here is the guide.

Step 1: Download PPT to YouTube and install it.
Step 2: Click "Import file" button to load PowerPoint files

Step 3: Click "Format" box to set the output formats, you can choose MP4 or WMV format

Step4: Click "Start" button to start converting.
Step5: Upload your video PowerPoint Presentation to YouTube

With these tips I hope you can go freely between the PowerPoint and YouTube. Any other suggestions are welcome.

I need techno help for my PC desperately...:(

A couple of days ago, I installed SKYPE on my PC and adjusted some sound settings because I couldn't hear myself on my microphone and after that my entire sound devices have gone missing including the loudhailer icon that's on the bottom right hand corner of my PC. Waaah!

Can anyone help?

I've since run a diagnostic on it, checked my device managers and even did a defragmentation on it but I can't seem to retrieve it. I used the normal Windows XP audio device which is the 'Sigma Audio Tel' but now all the fields and options are grayed out, I can't even change or restore it back.

Should I just restore my computer to last month's settings to retrieve my sound back? I can't watch any You Tube videos or play DVDs on it!:-? It's frustrating! LOL!

SOS!!

Play PPS (PowerPoint Show) on DVD Machine

I saw the thread Need help creating a DVD from powerpoint (.pps)...

I saw the thread Need help creating a DVD from powerpoint (.pps) and lot of people have take part in the discuss, so I write this thread, hope this can help those people who need help creating a DVD from PowerPoint(.pps)

PPS (PowerPoint show) is the PowerPoint file that can be opened by starting slide show directly instead of opening the editing view. You can "convert" a PPT file to PPS file simply by renaming the file extensions. To play a PPS file, you need PowerPoint or PowerPoint viewer installed on your computer.

Quite often, you might have received a PowerPoint presentation with a PPS extension rather than the normal PPT extension from others? Why? No presentation is created for presenting to the author only. A presentation must be shown in front of a group or wider range of audiences. PPS can bring you to the slide show view directly, any better ways? I don’t think so. Now, another problem, what is a PowerPoint show usually created for?

A. Deliver to your families or friends but do not want it to be modified.
B. For merchant or business show
C. For some celebration thing
D. For teaching or training
……
We can modify the PPS files by renaming the extensions breezily so if you want to send your presentations to others and keep your presentations originally, PPS is not the best choose.

Let see PPS for merchant and business show. It is the good idea to use PPS for merchant and business show because it can economize the advertising fee. The most import thing is we can design and revise our advertising easily if we like, the hardware we need is a computer and a projector.

Using PowerPoint for celebration like anniversary celebration, graduation ceremony and birthday party is also a judicious decision. It impressed me much when I was invited to a graduation ceremony with my senior. They created a wonderful presentation and put lots of pictures which are the wonderful memory of their college life.

I don’t know if you have noticed that there are some inconvenient things when we use the PPS for the merchant and business show. Or maybe you have been puzzled in the birthday party without a projector. We just have computer, DVD player and TV. Did you have even thought converting your presentations to DVD and then you can play back your slide show on a DVD player or on TV? If we can, the problem can solve completely!

LCD TV can be found on the street everywhere and the ADS rolled. At home we have TVs and DVD players, why not take the advantage of these sets and play your presentation on them?

OK, now it’s a thing of converting PPS to DVD, or burn PPS to DVD.
PowerPoint does not have the built-in ability to save presentations as video files or other video formats such as DVD-Video and, even if it did, there would be significant losses of interactivity (because DVD-Video and PowerPoint slide show have very different capabilities in this area) and loss of visual fidelity (DVD-Video resolution is less than typical computer display resolution and most television will not render colors the same way that a computer display will). And how can we do this?

Two solutions of converting PPS to DVD:
1. Windows Movie Maker (WMM), Windows XP and Vista contain this free software so you probably have it. But the troublesome thing is, you must save the presentation to a series of images and then import all the pictures onto WMM. Click on Import Media and select the pictures you want to make a movie. Finally you can use a third-party program to burn the movie you made to DVDs.
The advantage of this method is that it won’t spend you a cent, but all animations, transitions and videos will be discarded.
2. The professional PowerPoint to DVD conversion toolPPT2DVD
http://www.ppt-to-dvd.com

PPT2DVD empowers you to convert your PPT or PPS to DVD with DVD menu powered and then burn it onto DVD disc. You can play your PPS presentations on DVD player with a TV set.

After converting your PPS to DVD, you no longer worry about others will modify your presentations, you no longer worry about the projector and your AD fee. Just enjoy your time when designing the merchant show and celebration with your DVD player and TV.

The 2008 Government & Health Technologies Conference and Expo is sure to be one of the most informative expos to grace Toronto in a long time. With such speakers as Dr. Robert Bell, Col. Claude Hines, Jr. and Kelli Bravo just to name a few, the conference combines all the aspects of the technology and health world with top-notch companies in the presence such as Microsoft, Adobe, Telus, Cisco Systems and many more.

One of the most notable companies that will be attending this illustrious event is Microsoft. Worldwide it has about 78 565 employees fueling this well-oiled machine that is known as Microsoft. In 2007, Microsoft took up the technology scene with yearly Net revenue of 51.12 billion and a Net income of 14.07 billion. With Microsoft attending the Government & Health Technologies Conference and Expo, it will sure to be one for the ages.

Another company that will be contributing to the Government & Health Technologies Conference and Expo will be Adobe. Adobe is responsible for most business files with about 250 million PDF files across the World Wide Web alone. With the launch of the PDF file in 1993, Adobe hasn’t slowed down from there yet. Mark James, the Acrobat business development manager of Adobe will be in attendance speaking about the new technologies and innovations that Adobe has to offer.

Col. Claude Hines Jr. (Program Manager of the U.S. Department of Defense Theater Medical Information Program – Joint) will be in attendance at the Government & Health Technologies Conference and Expo. He will speak about the development and success of the Theater Medical Information Program- Joint. Also he will keep the public informed about the integration process of the applications that support the TMIP-J. His presentation will teach everybody about U.S military technology.

The government and health expo is bound to be a very incitfull presentation. The line up of speakers will exceed expectations. There will be a lot of speakers talking about their respected companies and sponsors.

Another of the companies I am truly looking forward of seeing what they have to offer is Pro Curve (Networking by HP). They provide wireless and wired solutions with their foundations that are based on the Adaptive Networks. This strategy makes is easier for networks to adapt to the users and vise versa.

Emergis, a Telus based company will also be at the show. They specialize in IT health as well as financial sectors. The company strives to develop IT solutions that make everyday transactions and exchange of information to make it more efficient and reliable to its customers and also with quality precision. The Government and Health Expo will be pleasured to have them be apart of this wonderful event.

I am also looking forward to seeing what the New Toronto Group or "NTG" has to offer. They provide Adobe services and products such as Connect, Acrobat Reader, Flex Flash, Flash Media Server and LiveCylce all across North America. In 2007 NTG got a real boost when they were awarded a contract to have their product Adobe Connect integrated in all Ontario Board of Education computers. I hope they will bring to the table what they have been doing for a long time, plus more.

Although there are many security companies around the globe, one of the best will be in attendance at the Expo. Securit is a world class security company that has 140 branches in a total of 16 countries. They specialize in integrating data and solutions that manage and reduce risk for consumers. These services include record management, data protection and Shred-it document destruction. I will also be looking forward to seeing what they have to offer in terms of security solutions and new innovations.

The Government and Health Expo 2008 will feature not only one type of presentations but many. I cannot wait to hear and see what the joint programs of The Centre for Security Science, Defence R&D Canada (DRDC) and Public Safety Canada have to talk about. Their duties include responding to the needs of the Canadian Forces and national securities communities in a technological matter. The way they go about responding is that they have a system that ties to the industrial, international allies and other government communities to make sure they have the right needs to fulfil the Canadian Forces.

I have had my Canonical Ubuntu system for almost a year and will be going into my third upgrade in about a week. The first was Feisty Fawn 7.04 then Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 and now onto Hardy Heron 8.04. All of this was diskless other than saving files and was free as are all applications and superb security upgrades and updates. Try ubuntu.com. The pricing was less than MicroWorks and that was the complete system. Ask ubuntu for a free conversion disk to make your Microsoft ubuntu compatible. Had it hooked up and running in 15 minutes. It's a tried and true alternative to Microsoft.
FYI: Microsoft receives $50 pure profit from any desktop system produced and $100 pure profit from any laptop system with their software installed.
A big thumbs up for Ubuntu.

So I heard they have a 7$ plan that gives you unlimited browsing on your 3g phone. I don't really like any of the phones that they offer. So does anyone know what kind of phones they support?

For example 3g HTC's and such.

Also if they are supported would they be categorized as blackberries/pda's hence subject to a data plan or would they be categorized as a normal phone and with a 7$ unlimited browsing plan?

I got a bit of spam on the weekend that offered a free download of this Apple browser for Windows. Out of curiosity, I downloaded it, and I've been fiddling with it for a couple days. My initial take is that it is very similar to Firefox in operation but maybe a bit faster. Here is a link for anyone who's interested:

Fido's "No Contract" Trick

Two weeks ago I received a call from Fido, asking me how satisfied I was with my services. He then proceed to offer me a $5 discount on my regular plan and a free new phone. I specifically and explicitly told him that I don't want to be bind into any contract, since I may be moving out of province/country within 6-8 months. His reply to me was: "It's not a contract. I just need your word to agree that you will stick with Fido in the next 24 months."

I repeatedly asked him to make sure that I won't be bind to any contract, and he gave the same line. I finally agreed, and my new phone was delivered to me the next week. Yesterday, I just received a letter from Fido, saying that my new "agreement" has started from March 2, 2008 and will end on March 2, 2010. And there will be up to $400 cancellation fee (plus applicable taxes) if I cancel my "agreement" before March 2010.

Today, I called a Fido rep. He explained to me that what they're doing/offering is not a contract, since I didn't have to sign it. They call it an AGREEMENT. I explained him my case, and all he said that I can do is to return the new phone before March 18 (15-day period) to have everything reversed back.

I feel it's such a dirty trick . I clearly told him that I didn't want to be in a contract. But of course, to Fido, a binding 2-year agreement is NOT considered a contract.

If you receive an offer from Fido, be aware that if you "agree" on anything, it can count as a Fido Agreement, which binds you into a contract that you don't have to sign.
