Reinventing the board topics.

This is a very important step we should be making to improve the layout and ease of use of CC forums. The staff threads have mentioned it several times in the last months so let's put this also up for talk.

Currently:
This all has to be rearranged and setup in the easiest possible order. Perhaps merging "The Lounge" with "Members Lounge" for one. Wreck Beach is kind of redundant, so merging the Steel Cage into Wreck Beach and using Wreck Beach as the new Steel Cage is an idea. Here's what I'm come up with really quick:

Based on feedback from the past months, I've decided we should all reshape CC into what YOU want it to be. It seems the social networking features have been a real hit, so I want to grow on that. Unfortunately, CC hasn't been that easy to navigate, so I'm posting this as an open discussion where we can all submit our ideas.

There's a ton of features on Canadian Content and it's become a real task to integrate them fully and make the site easy to navigate and easy to control. There's a whole new whack of features I'd like to integrate into this site including something like facebook's "what's I'm doing now" eg. Andem is currently caring for houseplants.

These are interactive features which make it a lot more fun. As you know, I was inspired by facebook's "The Wall" and cloned the feature on this site.. it's become a pretty popular feature actually.

"Refer a friend" has also been suggested, so I'd like to introduce that too.

I've also partly finished the submit an article system, but to the degree where it's only a private beta and used by me only at the moment.. I'd like to finish that too so commentaries can be published to Google News and MSN News.

I love the social aspect of facebook, and hate the setup of MySpace.. so a lot of these things are inspirations for me to introduce the features here to our community.

I'd like to have an open discussion about what you would like to see on here and from there I can start off with a blank sheet and a scratchpad to see what we can all come up with.

So I submit the following questions to the membership:

What community-driven site(s) do you find extremely well designed and easy to use?
For me, I like facebook without the annoying applications. I also like the design and setup of Digg.

What type of layout would you like to see on Canadian Content?
Do you like more a more graphical interface like (CC Forums used to be) or something more simple and fast-loading like Digg or The New Netscape or something big and blocky web 2.0-ish like Newsgator?

What extra type of features would you like to see?
More integration with the video site, perhaps or bringing user-submitted commentary listings to the main page? Other ideas have been brought up: A social bookmarking system like digg; "Badges" on profile pages; A political party icon for your profile and also on your posts (optional); Prominant thread rating;

Thread Pages: Do you prefer having the user info on the left like it used to be or on top of the post content like it is now?
Before and After (this page, for example).

User Groups: Is anybody interested in Yahoo! or Facebook style publicor private usergroups?

What kind of navigation system would you like to see?
The black menu bar isn't working for us. There are far too many features and pages to have such a simple system. What about drop down menus? What other comparibly-sized sites do you know of which you find extremely easy to navigate?Other web sites you find extremely useful, handy or otherwise easy to use.
Please provide any examples you would like me to consider while drawing up a design.

I'm really serious about putting several weeks or months into creating something you REALLY love but haven't really been able to totally come up with something everybody is satisfied with.

After some discussion, I will start drawing up some designs and plans integrating ideas and inspirations we've all come up with and post them for more discussion.

Hey Andem!

I thought I would raise the idea here of an 'invite' option, so that we could invite people who we might think would be interested in the forum.

Personally, I don't like my real life people to know where I post, but, there are a few acquaintances that I think would LOVE this forum. Inviting them personally would kind of defeat the purpose of me posting under a pseudonym here though.

On an old forum I belonged to, a member could put an e-mail for a friend into the invite option, and it would generate a message along the lines of
"A member of our forum has indicated that you might be interested in participating in our discussions, especially those pertaining to ______." It then gave a link, and also an option to block any further e-mails from the site, as well as the option to put a more personalized message into a field.

Just a thought.

Dear Member,

As you have probably realised, Canadian Content has suffered a serious outage of over 30 hours which has been linked to an explosion...

Dear Member,

As you have probably realised, Canadian Content has suffered a serious outage of over 30 hours which has been linked to an explosion in the data centre where our Domain Name Services server is hosted. Along with that, we also have a legacy server in the same building on the same floor which was effected by the outage.

The outage occurred at 7:29pm Eastern time on 31 May 08 caused by a serious fire in the main power supply base. 3 walls were blasted and we're thankful to report that nobody was injured. Fire safety personnel rejected the backup plan of using the backup power supply because the damage to the facility was too intense to give a straight go-ahead due to safety concerns. Our service provider has assured us that no hardware other than the power supply was damaged and our site will be sustained by the backup power supply which has now been approved by the fire chief.

As we've never had an outage of such magnitude before, nor have we ever witnessed such damage, we have learned from this lesson and are subsequently working on having a 3rd and 4th DNS service setup and moreover a skeleton backup server with some features stripped in case an event such as this occurs again.

Unfortunately, the redundancy we have setup in the past did not help us as the “big mamma” server hosting our DNS also suffered the outage.

Rest assured, this has not been brought on by a security breach but a real serious explosion over the weekend.

A few grey hairs later, I'd like to welcome you back online our web site and hopefully a break from the Internet on Saturday night and during Sunday has given you some time to relax.

Christopher Walsh
Administration
(ps. It could take half a day or more for everybody to be able to access the site again)
