Part 1- Elia and the false prophets:
One of the kings of the Children of Israel, called Ahab, married a woman from the idolaters. God in the Torah prohibited them from marrying the idolatresses; therefore this idolatress had control over her husband: King Ahab, and caused him to serve her idol: the Baal or Baalim. He commanded his people to worship Baal. The worship of Baalim then prevailed among people.

Then there was only one prophet of God: Prophet Elia (or Elijah); while the prophets of Baal (: the religious leaders inviting people to worship this idol) were about 450.

See the story of this "challenge in prayer" in the First Book of Kings: chapter 18:

21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, "How long halt you between two opinions? If the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word."
22 Then said Elijah to the people, "I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men."
23 "Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:"
24 And call you on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answers by fire, let him be God." And all the people answered and said, "It is well spoken."
25 And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for you are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under."
26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, "O Baal, hear us." But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, "Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he is sleeping, and must be awaked."
28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them……….
36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, "LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel, and that I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word."
37 "Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that You are the LORD God, and that You have turned their heart back again."
38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, "The LORD, He is the God; the LORD, he is the God."
40 And Elijah said to them, "Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape." And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, "Get up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain."………
45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain…. "
Part 2- Prophet Mohammed and the Christians of Najran:
Once a delegate of the Christians of Najran came to the city of Medina where Prophet Mohammed where; in order to question or inquire about the new prophet: Mohammed.
They wrangled with the believers, and most of their wrangling was about Jesus Christ. They said he was without father, then he should be the son of God. They were answered that Jesus in this respect is like Adam whom God created without father and mother.
They went on in their dispute for few days; then these ayat 3: 59-61 weres revealed:

The explanation:
(To God, the likeness of Jesus is as the likeness of Adam, whom He created from earth, then said to him: "Be!" and he was [as God willed.]

[What We have told you, Mohammed, about Jesus] is the truth from your Lord; so have no doubt [about that.]

Whoso [of them] wrangles with you [Mohammed] concerning the [matter of Jesus], now after you have been [fully] acquainted [concerning that],

say [to them]: "Come! Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves:

then let us supplicate [God] invoking the curse of God on those [among us] that are liars.")

When these ayat of the Quran were revealed, the Christian delegate discussed the matter among themselves: would they accept the challenge with Mohammed, or not; and they were afraid lest his prayer against them might be accepted,

or in case he was not a true prophet, and they were correct in their belief about the Trinity, that Jesus was God Himself, and that the Christ was the son of God; then they had to challenge with him, and in such case God might answer their prayer against him and prove they were correct and truthful in their doctrine.

They reached to an agreement among themselves: if Mohammed is truthful and he is a true prophet of God, then he will be confident in himself and in his Lord and he believes surely that he is a prophet of God –– then he will bring with him, in this contest, his nearest family members, but if he was a liar, then he would bring some of the rest of believers and exclude his family members; because he would then fear lest God's wrath should be against them.

Then when they went to the contest, they saw Prophet Mohammed bring his daughter Fatima Zahra, his cousin Ali: the husband of his daughter (:his son in law, as European call him) and his grandsons: Hassan and Hussein.

Therefore, they were afraid from challenging him in praying God, and they retreated without accepting the challenge.

Some of them returned to the Medina city and converted, because of being certain then that Prophet Mohammed was truthful.
            Firefox Adoption

I was intrigued by this article from PC Pro in the UK about the trailblazing pace of Firefox 3.0 adoption. It turns out that just after 10 days, the number of visitors using Firefox 3.0 is outnumbering those using Firefox 2.0. Wow! Talk about success!

Just for the fun of it, I looked at my (completely unscientific and scewed) site stats. It turns out that the number are very similar for me. Before June 17th, it turns out that Firefox 2.0 was already in the lead, followed by Firefox 3.0.

Here are the stats over a 32 day period:

Before June 17th:

Firefox 3 52.87%
Firefox 2 45.98%
Firefox 1 1.15%

On June 17th and after:

Firefox 3 62.00%
Firefox 2 38.00%

For the sake of comparison, here's how Firefox fared between the other browsers.

Before June 17th:

Firefox 85.29%
Internet Explorer 11.76%
Mozilla 1.96%
Safari 0.98%

On June 17th and after:

Firefox 86.21%
Internet Explorer 8.62%
Opera 5.17%

So, what conclusions should we draw behind these stats?

Well, to begin with, I don't think my site counts as a solid benchmark of Firefox for two reasons. I think it's fair to say that a lot of my visitors are like-minded and a lot of my regulars are friends and family. Most of them will be using Firefox.

The only surprise is that Firefox 3 was already ahead of Firefox 2 on my site 16 days before the release. This is most likely due to me encouraging my friends to try the latest beta.

I'm happy to see that Firefox is going to strong on my site — and not all of those visits are from people I know.

Beyond that, I'll let you draw your own conclusion.

How Microsoft Won and is Loosing

Steve Ballmer had it right. Developer developer developer!

The prime reason why Windows won over OS/2, the MacIntosh and even MS-DOS was thanks to the mighty influx of application that crept up for the OS. And the only way that those applications existed was thanks to developers.

Thought the Windows API are not the most graceful API I've encountered, they were reasonably well documented. I learned the Win16 and Win32 APIs mostly by reading the MSDN help files.

Using the simple tactic of ensuring that developers would favour the Windows platform early on, Microsoft achieved dominance in the operating system market.

But what is happening today? Balmer has been singing a different tune for the past few year. Since the rocketing rise of Microsoft's stocks capped in 2000, the behemoth is now struggling to pierce new markets while retaining their heavy monopoly.

It's interesting to see Microsoft running like a chicken with it's head cut off. Vista is a disaster, they are still loosing money in their search and gaming division and .NET is barely making a dent in the Java marketplace. Let's not even mention their iPod killer: the Zune.

If it wasn't for the near monopoly on Windows and Office, Microsoft would be hemoraging money faster than the speed of sound. BANG! Bankrupcy before they know it.

I think the reason is pretty clear. Microsoft is now spitting in the face of the very people that brought them to where they are: the developers.

Balmer himself said that he would like open source innovations to happen on Windows. However, he seems (or chooses) to be clueless about the free software philosophy.

Balmer can push all he wants, but he should realize that developers are usually intelligent folks. Many open source developers are quite brilliant. I do believe that most developers can smell bullcaca when it is spewed out of someone's mouth.

Genuine honesty free of marketspeak is not something you often hear from Microsoft!

It's certainly not by forcing proprietary software or standards down the FOSS developer's throat that Microsoft is going to win any friends. Neither is it going to give developers the desire or even the posibility to innovate.
Personally, I like computers to work for me and not the other way around. That's one of the many reasons I don't use Windows — I cannot stand an OS that thinks it can tell me how I should work.Labels: api, free software, freedom, microsoft, programming, windows

I'm kinda worried when Microsoft themselves declare that ODF is the clear winner in the OOXML-ODF war.

However, I think I can agree with Microsoft. The whole ISO/OOXML saga gave ODF a huge boost both in terms of popularity and credibility. This means that more people and organizations are aware of ODF than ever before.

I've long learns not to take anything Microsoft says at face value, so I'm a bit concerned about the statement. Maybe the statement is genuine, but I can't help but think that Microsoft has something up their sleeve. Until they display they ace, I'll keep my eyes and ears open.Labels: freedom, iso, microsoft, odf, ooxml, openoffice

I posted this comment a while back in another thread, and then I got to thinking about it and felt I should startup a debate surrounding it:

"...... And I say raped Marry, since she was pregnanted by God without her consent or knowlege.... ffs.... God didn't even have the decency to speak to her face to face and sent one of his messengers to do the job..... like the anti-social pervert he is.......

....God himself broke the sanctity of marriage by raping Marry, who was married to Joseph and got her pregnant without her consent.... or his for that matter.... and when one is supposed to follow the comandment of "Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's wife" which was supposed to be written by God himself..... WTF kind of logic is that when he breaks his own rules?"

Regardless of her being a virgin, she was still married to Joseph and therefore the commandment still applied.... so is God above his own commandments where this is just an example of "Do as I say, not as I do" or is there something more to this?

Another aspect if one wants to delve further into this, is that all humans are born with sin apparently..... yet they claimed Jesus was without sin, even though his conception was without consent until after an angel told her how it was going to be and his existence contradicts one of God's own commandments.

So what does this say about the entire religion in which follows Jesus and assumes that he was sin-free?

I mean, if our parents got married in a church, did everything by the book, had a baby and that baby is still full of sin.... how does Jesus get away with the above and not be full of sin too, if not, more?

Because God exempted him from those same rules and thus they didn't apply?

Well what kind of message is being sent across when God does this?

Monsanto responsible for Genetic Contamination

Monsanto has to Accept Full Responsibility for Genetic Contamination

Monsanto has to Accept Full Responsibility for Genetic Contamination

Global Research, July 3, 2008
Current Concerns

On 19 March 2008 Monsanto accepted their responsibility for the genetic contamination of Schmeiser’s canola fields in an out of court settlement between Percy Schmeiser and Monsanto.

In an earlier trial the Canadian Supreme Court had recognized the legality of the patent protection to Monsanto’s Transgene, but at the same time this court had transferred the question about the legality of a patent about life and forms of life to the Canadian Parliament for re-evaluation. In accordance with earlier legal norms the owner of a patent on a certain gene is also the owner of the respective harvest. This question is still pending and has to be re-assessed by the Canadian Parliament.

Since Schmeiser could prove that he had never used Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds nor the total-herbicide Roundup Ready going with the Monsanto GM seeds, and that he had indeed no advantage from the pollution and contamination of his harvest, he was acquitted of Monsanto’s compensation demands.

In 2005 Schmeiser again found Monsanto GM Rap plants on his fields. He informed Monsanto and demanded that the company remove the plants. Monsanto confirmed to Schmeiser that the plants were Roundup-Ready raps and therefore property of Monsanto. Referring to the existing judgement that the owner of a plant is also liable for plant contamination damages, Schmeiser had the plants removed professionally and forwarded the removal cost invoice to Monsanto.

In earlier attempts to achieve an out of court settlement, Monsanto had not consented to paying the removal cost amounting to $660, so Schmeiser subsequently had sued the company. Monsanto would have paid for the contamination damage, but only under the condition that Schmeiser signed a “gag agreement”, i.e. he would agree not to talk about the damage case, which would have deprived him and/or his wife of the right for the remainder of their lives to ever speak about the case publicly or to ever again sue Monsanto for contaminating their harvest in future before any court. Schmeiser rejected. The demands raised by Monsanto were totally immoral. When the judge asked why Monsanto had not simply paid the very small sum of $ 660, Monsanto’s lawyer Richard W. Danyliuk responded that there was a lot more involved than just $ 660.

One hour before the court hearing was scheduled on March 19, 2008 Monsanto accepted all demands of Percy Schmeiser as well as their responsibility for the contamination of Schmeiser’s fields. Monsanto does not only pay for the damage but also accepts that Schmeiser reports and informs the public about the background and that he can express his opinion and position about this case in public. The acceptance of responsibility by Monsanto as the owner of the patented Transgene for the contamination of neighbouring fields opens the path for all farmers in the world to demand compensation by Monsanto.

New light has been shed on the greatest battle in British naval history after a rare eye-witness account by one of its heroes was uncovered.

The Battle of Trafalgar, 1805, in which the Royal Navy, led by Horatio Nelson, completely overwhelmed the combined French/Spanish fleet

William Hargood was captain of HMS Belleisle, which was at the heart of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 when Admiral Lord Nelsonand the Royal Navy defeated the Franco-Spanish fleet.

Around a quarter of his vessel's men were killed or injured as they staged an often lone fight against the enemy before finally being "dismasted".

Now what is believed to be Hargood's own log of the battle is up for auction after being discovered gathering dust in a loft of a house in Loughborough, Leicestershire.

Describing the scene in the hours ahead of the battle, Hargood noted the fight would take place in "light airs and hazy weather, with heavy swell".

He later wrote: "At daylight we saw the enemy's fleet bearing east nine miles, consisting of 33 sail of the line, five frigates and two sloops.

"5.40: Answered the general signal to form the order of sailing. 6.00: Answered the general signal to bear up and sail large and prepare for battle.

"Made all sail, bearing down on the enemy. Answered the general telegraph signal from Lord Nelson that England expected every man to do his duty."

Of the actual battle, he kept his entries brief and clinical.

He wrote: "12.08: commenced fire on the enemy. 12.10: Cut the stern of a Spanish 80-gun ship.

"1.30: Heavy fire on both sides. Our ship became totally unmanageable. Most of the sails and rigging being cut away.

"3.15: One of our ships passed our bow and took the fire of an enemy's ship. 3.25: The Swiftsure passed our stern and cheered us." Describing the end of battle, which claimed 449 British fatalities, including Nelson, he wrote: "The action ceased. People were employed securing the guns, cleaning and pumping ship. Strong gales and squally at the end."

The Belleisle was second into battle, closely following the flagship HMS Royal Sovereign into enemy lines, and in the very thick of the action, at one time firing at the Fougueux and the Santa Ana simultaneously.

Despite capturing the Argonauta, the Belleisle was eventually dismasted with 33 dead and 93 wounded, but kept flying her flag for 45 minutes until other vessels came to her rescue.

Hargood, the son of a humble purser, survived the battle and was later made an admiral to cap a distinguished naval career.

The log, dated October 21 1805 and verified by the National Manuscripts department at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, will be auctioned later this month and is expected to fetch £800.

Dr Who, the world's longest-running sci-fi series, which started in 1963, is going from strength to strength. After the current series ends on saturday, the new series will return to screens in 2010.

One of Dr Who's companions will be killed off in the final episode of Dr Who this weekend, according to growing speculation among fans.

Dr Who and Rose

Hints dropped throughout the series suggest one of the Doctor's friends will die while fighting alongside the Time Lord.

Billie Piper, who plays Rose Piper, and Catherine Tate, who stars as Donna Noble, are the favourites to face the chop.

Torchwood's Captain Jack, played by John Barrowman, and Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen), his original companion for the 1970s, are unlikely to die as they are both filming new episodes for their own spin-offs.

The most feasible senario could see Donna fall victim to the evil Daleks and their creator Davros. Donna has been told throughout the series that she faces an uncertain fate.

But some fans even speculate that the Doctor, played by David Tennant, will not make it out alive.

Saturday's episode, called Journey's End, will also feature a host of former companions including Freema Agyeman's Martha Jones.

A spokeswoman for the show refused to rule out the rumours. She said: "We do not comment on future storylines."

Saturday's episode is seen as the parting shot for script writer and executive producer Russell T Davies who will leave the show after four special episodes next year.

He will hand over to Steven Moffat, the writer behind some of the most successful episodes of the sci-fi revival, for a new full series in 2010.

The episode will be screened on BBC One at 6.40pm on Saturday July 5.
Daily Mail

It may not quite meet NASA's exacting specifications, but this homemade rocket could help Britain cross the final frontier.

Nova 2's inventor Steve Bennett, a toothpaste technician turned rocket scientist, believes it holds the key to blasting tourists into space within just five years.

Not only that, but the Salford scientist is quietly confident of winning the race to launch the first space tourism business - beating off a host of billionaire rivals including Sir Richard Branson.

'The Nova 2' at the University of Salford, Greater Manchester, on Monday. Inventor Steve Bennett hopes to blast off next year

He said: 'They have got more money than us - but we have got the experience in launching rockets.

'I think we can just about do it. It is not about what you spend, it is how you spend it.'

Nova 2 can reach 120,000ft in just three minutes, and the next generation will aim to reach the 62mile border between atmosphere and space

Competition is not the only hurdle to be crossed before Mr Bennett, a lecturer in physics and space technology, takes a leap into the unknown.

For one, he is in desperate need of funding, being £7million short of the £11million needed for his space mission.

Then there is the small matter of a launching pad, with a proposed purpose-built 'spaceport' in the US still little more than a building site.

The 43-year-old father-of-two also has to overcome his critics, who dismissed him as an eccentric dreamer when one of his devices set Dartmoor ablaze on crashing just seconds after lift-off in 1998.

For now, he will concentrate his efforts on Nova 2, which became Britain's largest space rocket when it was unveiled at Salford University on Tuesday.

Nova 2 is said to be capable of shooting to 120, 000ft - around three times the cruising altitude of an aeroplane - in just over three minutes.

Weighing in at just over one tonne and 57 foot long, the rocket is due to make its first test flight - an unmanned voyage which will focus on safety - in September next year.

Likely venues include the otherworldly Morecambe Bay in the north-west of England.

Mr Bennett said: 'There's open space, it is inaccessible, so you don't have people walking about.

'And the tide comes in twice a day, so if something burns, the water will soon put it out.'

If the launch is successful, a more powerful daughter rocket could be blasting tourists into space by 2013.

If all goes well, Steve Bennett hopes to reach space in 2013

Designed to fly at 3,500mph, the 17-tonne Thunderstar will take 23 minutes to travel 62miles (100km) - the point at which space begins - and return to Earth.

The three-seater capsule will fall back to Earth with the aid of nothing more sophisticated than a pair of giant parachutes.

Two Britons have already signed up for what could be the first amateur space flight, paying £250,000 for the voyage which will include a brief taste of weightlessness.

The mission will be piloted by Mr Bennett, whose interest in space travel was fired in boyhood by the Thunderbirds TV series and the moon landings.

He said: 'We will go straight up and straight down.

'It will be like a roller coaster ride, except a little bit more powerful.

'You will see the curvature of the Earth and the blackness of space and we are looking at about four minutes of weightlessness.

'For many years, it was just a dream. But every day I get a little bit closer.'
Archaeologists discover Britain's first 'shopping centre' in Roman dig

02nd July 2008
Daily Mail

One of Britain's very first shopping centres has been unearthed - a high street that was fashionable 1,800 years ago when togas were still in vogue.

A row of narrow shop buildings uncovered by archaeologists shows that the Romans in Britain had their very own well-heeled fashionistas.

The shop buildings used by the stylish Romans in ancient Britain were uncovered by archaeologists in fields in Monmouthshire.

The site, now occupied only by the rural village of Caerwent near Newport, was formerly Venta Silurum - one of 15 major towns in Britain at the time.

Boudicca's boutique? Archaeologists uncover the outlines of Roman shops at Caerwent

Crucially for archaeologist, unlike most of these 15 towns Venta Silurum did not stay important. Instead it declined - and so escaped the demolition, rebuilding and enlargement that have obliterated early remains elsewhere over the centuries.

Archaeologists say the surviving evidence show it was affluent and fashionable in Roman times, with wealthy villas in the suburbs.

A villa with painted walls and mosaic floors among the other finds also points to the town being home to wealthy Romans in the Third Century AD, when Venta Silurum was booming.

Archaeologist Tom Scott described the 44-acre site as 'beautifully preserved'.

He said: 'Discovering the shop buildings and the villa, it seems as if people lived here in some style.

'The site appealed to us as it is one of the best preserved Roman towns in the UK.

'This was a golden opportunity for us to find out more about it.'

A team of 50 worked on the excavation at the Roman site including members of Wessex Archaeology and volunteers from the local Chepstow Archaeology Society.

Seven trenches were dug at three different locations to uncover more about previously unexcavated parts of the town.

Long thin buildings were also found in several places - believed to be shop buildings on the high street.

Key finds included a penknife hilt of bone depicting two gladiators fighting.

Other artefacts uncovered included coins, glass, ceramics, human and animal bones, lead patches used for repairing, and bits of mosaic.

Mr Scott said: 'This type of town was a "civitas capital" - a civilian town and centre of local Roman government - one of around 15 in the UK.

'Most of these had later towns built on top so you can't see the town walls, but Caerwent is beautifully preserved.'

Archaeologist Jacqueline McKinley said: 'The large villa we found suggests this was a posh part of town.

'We also found animal bones on the site which suggests that at least one of the high street shops was a butchers.

'It looks as if the animal bones belonged to joints of meat that would have been displayed in the shop window.

'It was a very successful dig and filled in some gaps in our knowledge of the ancient town.'

West London giants Chelsea, who finished second in the Premiership and second in the European Cup last season (pipped to the post on each of those occasions by Manchester United), have bought Deco from Barcelona for £8 million.

Chelsea's new manager is Luis Felipe Scolari, who was manager of Portugal until they got knocked out of Euro 2008. Deco played for Portugal under Scolari, and Scolari wanted Deco at Chelsea.

Chelsea sign Barca playmaker Deco

Deco has won both the European and Uefa Cup in his career

Chelsea have signed Portugal midfielder Deco from Spanish giants Barcelona on a two-year deal for a fee of about £8m.

The 30-year-old was recently told by Barca's new coach Pep Guardiola that he did not feature in their future plans.

"It is good for me to be here and first of all I am very happy to be here," Deco told Chelsea's official website.

Deco becomes the Blues' first signing since Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was appointed manager earlier this month.

However, his signing is Chelsea's second of the summer after international team-mate Jose Bosingwa.

Brazil-born Deco joined Barcelona from Porto in 2004 after helping the Portuguese side win the Uefa Cup, Champions League and domestic league titles under former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

He won two league championships with the Catalan giants, and was part of the team that beat Arsenal in the Champions League final in Paris in 2006.

However, a series of injuries hampered him during the 2007-08 season, and he made just 14 starts in Barcelona's La Liga campaign.

"I am sure I have come at the right time to do great things and be able to help Chelsea go back to the way it was and come back to being the first one, not only in England but also to win the Champions League that has been their dream for so long," added Deco.

"The Premier League is a great league and it is getting better and you can see that with the Champions League final, where you had two English teams."

Deco's arrival significantly boosts a midfield line-up already featuring the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Michael Essien, Jon Mikel Obi and Claude Makelele.

"It is great that we have so many great players here at Chelsea and it is great that there is the competition which is healthy for everybody and this just makes the team better," he added.

"To have great players in any position of the club just enhances the club. I know it is a new challenge but I am looking forward to it."

BBC Radio 5 Live football correspondent Jonathan Legard said that Deco caught the eye in Scolari's midfield during Euro 2008 more than team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

"A two-year deal suggests he is not a long-term building block. He will be 31 in August but his winners' pedigree, Champions League triumphs with Barcelona and Porto will balance recent fears about fitness and consistency," said Legard.

And Legard believes Deco's arrival makes Lampard's possible exit to Inter Milan even more likely.

"Deco's arrival looks like hastening the departure of Frank Lampard, who has done little to quell long-term speculation that he is bound for a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan. "Barring a last-minute change of heart on both sides it's a question of when he signs in Italy, not if."

Vancouver beat Toronto in soccer today. Yay. A good game until I replayed it. Vancouver played a mediocre game. They were somewhat lucky to win. Van kicked many long balls way ahead and the TO defence picked them off and returned to the offence and worked the ball up to the goal and got more chances. And when Van got close they made poor passes into the middle.

Soccer does not show enough replays of close calls. Instead they too often show the player running back to defence. This is dull.

I don't understand soccer reffing. The offsides are wrong half the time, and the ref gives out way too few yellow cards. Players hack each other knowing a yellow card is rare and this stifles the offence. Yellow cards must be given out early and often to encourage more goals and action.

Yet Vancouver got goal from a foul in the penalty box today. I think reffing in soccer is the worst in the sports world.

How about this idea, No only legalize Canadian pot but put Canada first and foremost in the world for high grade Marijuana and Hemp with a willingness to trade with other countries? The punitive adjustments made by America on the Canadian economy might be made up with easy and above board sales to not only American customers, but all others as well. Tax it like any vice product and go to town. With a 6 billion dollar a year trade from B.C. bringing it into the light would in my estimation triple that amount.
Then let the marketers loose with a tourism angle, exporting and a big plus is that there can be two to three crops a year grown in Canada.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it. :D
So asks Newsweek's cover, which features a full-length photo of the prime minister his people voted the greatest Briton of them all.
Quite a tribute, when one realizes Churchill's career coincides with the collapse of the British empire and the fall of his nation from world pre-eminence to third-rate power.
That the Newsweek cover was sparked by my book Churchill, Hitler and The Unnecessary War seems apparent, as one of the three essays, by Christopher Hitchens, was a scathing review. Though in places complimentary, Hitchens charmingly concludes: This book "stinks."
Understandable. No Brit can easily concede my central thesis: The Brits kicked away their empire. Through colossal blunders, Britain twice declared war on a Germany that had not attacked her and did not want war with her, fought for 10 bloody years and lost it all.
Unable to face the truth, Hitchens seeks solace in old myths.
We had to stop Prussian militarism in 1914, says Hitchens. "The Kaiser's policy shows that Germany was looking for a chance for war all over the globe."
Nonsense. If the Kaiser were looking for a war he would have found it. But in 1914, he had been in power for 25 years, was deep into middle age but had never fought a war nor seen a battle.
From Waterloo to World War I, Prussia fought three wars, all in one seven-year period, 1864 to 1871. Out of these wars, she acquired two duchies, Schleswig and Holstein, and two provinces, Alsace and Lorraine. By 1914, Germany had not fought a war in two generations.
Does that sound like a nation out to conquer the world?
As for the Kaiser's bellicose support for the Boers, his igniting the Agadir crisis in 1905, his building of a great fleet, his seeking of colonies in Africa, he was only aping the British, whose approbation and friendship he desperately sought all his life and was ever denied.
In every crisis the Kaiser blundered into, including his foolish "blank cheque" to Austria after Serb assassins murdered the heir to the Austrian throne, the Kaiser backed down or was trying to back away when war erupted.
Even Churchill, who before 1914 was charging the Kaiser with seeking "the dominion of the world," conceded, "History should ... acquit William II of having plotted and planned the World War."
What of World War II? Surely, it was necessary to declare war to stop Adolf Hitler from conquering the world and conducting the Holocaust.
Yet consider. Before Britain declared war on him, Hitler never demanded return of any lands lost at Versailles to the West. Northern Schleswig had gone to Denmark in 1919, Eupen and Malmedy had gone to Belgium, Alsace and Lorraine to France.
Why did Hitler not demand these lands back? Because he sought an alliance, or at least friendship, with Great Britain and knew any move on France would mean war with Britain -- a war he never wanted.
If Hitler were out to conquer the world, why did he not build a great fleet? Why did he not demand the French fleet when France surrendered? Germany had to give up its High Seas Fleet in 1918.
Why did he build his own Maginot Line, the Westwall, in the Rhineland, if he meant all along to invade France?
If he wanted war with the West, why did he offer peace after Poland and offer to end the war, again, after Dunkirk?
That Hitler was a rabid anti-Semite is undeniable. Mein Kampf is saturated in anti-Semitism. The Nuremberg Laws confirm it. But for the six years before Britain declared war, there was no Holocaust, and for two years after the war began, there was no Holocaust.
Not until midwinter 1942 was the Wannsee Conference held, where the Final Solution was on the table.
That conference was not convened until Hitler had been halted in Russia, was at war with America and sensed doom was inevitable. Then the trains began to roll.
And why did Hitler invade Russia? This writer quotes Hitler 10 times as saying that only by knocking out Russia could he convince Britain it could not win and must end the war.
Hitchens mocks this view, invoking the Hitler-madman theory.
"Could we have a better definition of derangement and megalomania than the case of a dictator who overrules his own generals and invades Russia in wintertime ... ?"
Christopher, Hitler invaded Russia on June 22.
The Holocaust was not a cause of the war, but a consequence of the war. No war, no Holocaust.
Britain went to war with Germany to save Poland. She did not save Poland. She did lose the empire. And Josef Stalin, whose victims outnumbered those of Hitler 1,000 to one as of September 1939, and who joined Hitler in the rape of Poland, wound up with all of Poland, and all the Christian nations from the Urals to the Elbe.
The British Empire fought, bled and died, and made Eastern and Central Europe safe for Stalinism. No wonder Winston Churchill was so melancholy in old age. No wonder Christopher rails against the book. As T.S. Eliot observed, "Mankind cannot bear much reality."

Jun. 13 - Japanese company Genepax presents its eco-friendly car that runs on nothing but water.
The car has an energy generator that extracts hydrogen from water that is poured into the car's tank. The generator then releases electrons that produce electric power to run the car. Genepax, the company that invented the technology, aims to collaborate with Japanese manufacturers to mass produce it.
SOUNDBITE: Kiyoshi Hirasawa, CEO, Genepax.

Conservative Anglican leaders pledged Sunday to stay in the worldwide Anglican Communion, but they also announced plans to form a separate council of bishops to counter a movement within mainstream Anglicanism that they say promotes immoral behaviour.

Their intentions were announced on the final day of the week-long Globan Anglican Future Conference in Jerusalem, convened largely in response to growing acceptance of gay clergy and the blessing of same-sex unions in North American churches.

"We cherish our Anglican heritage and the Anglican Communion and have no intention of departing from it," conference members said in their final statement. But they also said some Anglican leaders are trying to rewrite the Bible along liberal lines.

In its statement, the group, which says it represents 35 million Anglicans, accused churches in the West of proclaiming "a false gospel [that] undermines the authority of God's word" and promotes a "variety of sexual preferences and immoral behaviour."

Canadian Cheryl Chang, a delegate at the meeting, said the Jerusalem Declaration is an important way to preserve church traditions.

"This sets out the fundamental, essential beliefs of Anglicanism that we have had since the beginning of the church," she said.

"This is not about gay marriage. Gay marriage is nothing more than a symptom of the bigger problem that this conference is concerned with, and that is, how are we going to view the Bible and how are we going to view our relationship with one another in the church," Chang said.

Archbishop Peter Jensen of Sydney, Australia, one of the organizers of the conference, blamed the rift in the 77-million-member church on a decision by the U.S. Episcopal Church five years ago to consecrate its first openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson.

Jensen told the Sydney Morning Herald that Anglicans "are in a battle for ideas between the liberal wing who want to export their ideas to the rest of us and the biblical Anglicans."

The declaration did not mention the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams by name, but said the Anglican leadership had done nothing to discipline the Episcopal Church for its stand on gay clergy or the Anglican Church of Canada for blessing same-sex marriages.

Although the conservatives, a coalition mainly of African Anglican churches and orthodox U.S. Episcopalians, said their movement does not represent a complete split in the church, they appeared set to challenge the authority of Williams.

"While acknowledging the nature of Canterbury as an historic see, we do not accept that Anglican identity is determined necessarily through recognition by the Archbishop of Canterbury," they said.

Manchester United have put Germany's Euro 2008 winger Bastian Schweinsteiger at the top of their hit-list to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to pounce for the Bayern Munich star if Real Madrid win the titanic tussle for Portuguese ace Ronaldo - and a £12million offer is in the pipeline.

Schweinsteiger, 24, has the kind of experience and top-class pedigree that United will need if they lose Ronaldo to his "dream club," and contact has already been made at the highest level.

The powerful German is in the last year of his contract with Bayern and looks sure to quit despite the pleas of new coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Schweinsteiger, who was also on Chelsea's radar under Avram Grant's management and is still interesting the Londoners, would be able to move relatively cheaply.

If he lets his contract run down he could go for nothing next summer.

The fiery right-winger, sent off in his first game at the Euros but set to start against Spain tonight, is also refusing to sign anything while the United option is alive.

Sources in Schweinsteiger's camp say there has been contact with United, who will set the wheels in motion if Ronaldo waves goodbye to Old Trafford.

The German fancies a move to either England or Spain. German pal Michael Ballack has told him all about the Premier League - and how he can double his £35,000-a-week wages.

"England does have a good appeal," said Schweinsteiger. "It is now one of the world's best leagues and I have heard all about it from Michael, Jens Lehmann and Thomas Hitzlsperger who have all played there.

"I have always wanted to play in England so we will see if it happens this year."

Fergie has looked far and wide for potential replacements for Ronaldo, checking out Lionel Messi at Barcelona and also weighing up a move for Wigan's Luis Antonio Valencia.

But Schweinsteiger ticks most boxes and things could start moving quickly once Ronaldo comes back from holiday to face the music with Ferguson.

United fear he will go but they will not make it easy.

Real Madrid are talking in terms of a £63.7million bid - a figure based on their theory that he has a sell-on clause of around 80million euros.

Real have dangled the possibility of adding a Bernabeu star to the mix in a player-plus-cash deal but United are not remotely interested in that option.
