Paul Gascoigne, one of the stars of the great England side which narrowly missed out on reaching the 1990 World Cup Final, has been arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

The former Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Rangers midfielder was taken into custody in the early hours of the morning after a disturbance in the Jesmond area of Newcastle.

Gazza who, in 1995, pretended to play a flute as though he was a member of the Orange Order after he scored for Protestant-supported Rangers against Catholic-supported Celtic, could face a fine of anywhere between £50 and £80.

Gazza has a history of drink problems. In 2005, he became manager of Kettering Town, but was fired after just one month in charge after assaulting a press officer outside a hotel in Liverpool.

On 21 February 2008 he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act after threatening to harm himself in a Newcastle hotel.

And in September 2008 he was arrested by police in Gateshead for criminal damage whilst trying to enter a closed pub with his own set of keys.

The former Newcastle United and Glasgow Rangers midfielder was taken into custody in the early hours of the morning following a disturbance in the Jesmond area of Newcastle.

Gascoigne, 42, who has faced a long battle with alcohol, was arrested at about 2.15am after police arrived at Jesmond Park West.

He was later taken to a police station before receiving a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly and released.

A Northumbria police spokesman could not confirm how much the notice was for but fines are set at £50 and £80 depending on the seriousness of the offence.

Last month The Daily Telegraph reported that Gascoigne had been training with up-and-coming players at the Newcastle United academy.

The 42-year-old former Tottenham and Newcastle player has been out of football since being sacked as the manager of Kettering Town four years ago but was said to be setting his sights on gaining his coaching qualifications.
