Ode To The Roughies – The 2009 Grey Cup
The weather was fine
For both teams that day
The stands were quite green
And the skies were not gray
The game started off
With a bang, to be sure
The Grey Cup was waiting
With all its allure
The farmers were hootin'
And hollerin' and such
At half time that cup
Was right in their clutch
They all took a break
For a pep talk, I think
The aroma of victory
Was strong, a good stink
And then the third quarter
Started off pretty good
The offence and defence
Played just like they should
And even the fourth part
At the start was OK
Even though the “bad guys”
Finally learned how to play
It became a cliff-hanger
As the end came in sight
But the Roughies were marching
And continued to fight
And then on that final
and quite fateful play
The ball missed the posts
And that saved the day
But wait! Are those flags?
Whatever could be
The reason for stopping
That sweet vic-tor-ee?
My Gawd, is it true?
Oh yes, it is so
There were 13 green players
Lined up in a row
The play was replayed
A bit closer this time
The ball flew right through
And stopped on a dime
And so did the hearts
Of all the Green fans
Who saw the big win
Yanked out of their hands
In great disbelief
They watched it unfold
Their blood turned to jelly
As it does when it's cold
Even tho' it seems
like a game straight from hell
Let's all not forget
It is C-F-L
On the edge our seats
Right down to the end
OMG the suspense
Did make one's hair bend
But one thing for sure
In spite of the loss
The Green folks will always
Be green, just like moss
They love their Roughriders
Through thick and through thin
They're already dreaming
Of a twenty-ten win!
So melon-heads don't
Despair or dismay
Your team will be back
And itchin' to play
And they'll be the winners
In glorious Green
If they learn how to count
All the way to thirteen!
Respectfully, by Lloyd
