Mclaren was busted looking at Ferrari's car design that they obtained from a Ferrari employee.

$100,000,000 (that's $100 Million!) fine. The team cannot receive any points for this year and next plus their car must be scrutinized next year (more for the embarrasment factor than actually checking if they are cheating I think).

Big hit to Mclaren and deservedly so.

The drivers still get to keep their points however.

How did the authorities find out? The big boss man of Team Mclaren, Ron Dennis, tipped them off. Now there is an upstanding citizen, eh? It cost his team $100Million!!!

I've followed Formula one for years and this is a joke. The best way to tell the cars apart is the colour. They will all have the latest ground effects, and boundary layer downforce devices, and how to squeeze the last horsepower out of the engine. Every team is looking for something that will give them that little bit of unfair advantage that they will have for usually less than a year...A hundred million dollar fine? Not likely.

Why did Ron Dennis tip off FIA? Because Alonzo threatened to do it, unless they started treating him as a star.

As Jackie Stewart said, this has been going on for ever, it's no surprize. I can only venture that Bernie ran out of ways to make Ferrari win, and decided that this was his golden opportunity.

I would say that a lot of Formula one champions had some unfair advantage. There are some champions like Jackie Stewart who seem to get more out of a car than others and manage to win against the odds.

Here is a list of the World Championship winners:
