Got a bit of a headache this morning then, John?

26th February 2007

True British grit: Chelsea and England captain John Terry parties despite being knocked unconscious and sent to hospital in yesterday's Carling Cup Final against Arsenal.

Ouch - Arsenal defender Diaby accidentally kicks Terry in the chin as Terry attempted to score by a diving header.

Rescue ... medic prepares to clear Terry's airways

Medics feared Terry may be brain-damaged as his faced turned blue and his eyes lolled. He also swallowed his tongue. Terry made a remarkable recover to party with his Carling Cup-winning team mates.

John Terry underlined his indestructibility last night by partying with his Chelsea team-mates just hours after being kicked unconsciousness in the Carling Cup Final.

Showing the remarkable recovery skills that have earned him the nickname "Miracle Man", the 26-year-old Blues and England skipper joined the celebrations at the Aura nightclub in Mayfair, London after his team's 2-1 win over Arsenal in Cardiff.

The Barking-born star partied into the early hours with Chelsea stars including Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack and twogoal hero Didier Drogba.

But if he woke up with a sore head this morning it may have nothing to do with the Cristal champagne.

Earlier in the day, the brave defender was poleaxed by an accidental kick to the face from Arsenal's Abou Diaby as he dived for a header in the opposition penalty area.

Medics from both teams rushed onto the pitch to treat the England international as he lay motionless.

Some fans in the crowd feared the worst and horrified Chelsea and Arsenal players looked on.

Play was held up for so long that injury time made the game last for 102 minutes, as opposed to the usual 90. Terry's fiancée Toni Poole was at the game with the couple's twin babies Summer Rose and Georgie John.

But, incredibly, after being carried off the pitch on a stretcher, with a neck brace and oxygen mask on at 4.30pm, the steely skipper was back from the hospital by 6pm to rejoin his celebrating team-mates.

The "miracle" was completed last night when a resolute, but slightly groggy-looking JT arrived for the party, showing the world that wild horses - never mind an Arsenal boot - could not drag him away from celebrating his team's victory.

'We feared for skipper's life'

Rescue ... medic prepares to clear Terry's airways

CHELSEA skipper John Terry lies motionless in a chilling moment that left team-mates fearing he could die.

Terry stopped breathing after being kicked in the head during yesterday’s 2-1 Carling Cup Final win.

He was rushed to hospital before making a remarkable recovery which astonished medics.

The Chelsea defender and Arsenal’s Abou Diaby challenged for the ball and Terry fell on his face in the 56th minute of the match — later marred by a mass brawl.

Terry swallowed his tongue and his team-mate Petr Cech — who plays in a helmet after fracturing his skull during a game last last October — admitted he “feared the very worst”.

Earlier this season Chelsea's Petr Cech was taken to hospital after Reading's Steven Hunt accidentally fractured his skull in this challenge.

Keeper Cech said: “It was one of the worst moments I’ve ever experienced on the pitch.”

Recovery ... Terry in suit after hospital trip

Frank Lampard said: “It was very scary. John’s face was very still except for his eyes flickering.”

Physios dashed on to the pitch at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium and battled for five minutes to clear Terry’s airways and stabilise him.

He was given oxygen, fitted with a neck brace and stretchered off.

England skipper Terry was rushed to the University of Wales Hospital for scans on his head and neck.

At 5.45pm he left the hospital — still in his kit and wrapped in a blanket — and even returned to the stadium to join in Chelsea’s celebrations.

He was later spotted in his suit — and smiling.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said last night: “The scans show he is fine.”

Ugly scenes broke out in the final minutes of the game and Arsenal’s Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor and Chelsea’s Jon Obi Mikel were sent off.

It's moments like these that certainly show how dangerous football can be compared to cissy sports like baseball or basketball.
