Brazilian Pan Am cyclists escorted off the DVP

TORONTO - For nine members of the Brazilian cycling team, the Don Valley Parkway probably looked like a great way to practice for the Pan Am Games.
A call came in to Toronto Police just before 10 a.m. Sunday about cyclists on the usually busy highway, Det.-Sgt. Devin Kealey said.
“Basically you have nine cyclists from Brazil and they were just looking to take in a one-hour ride to practice,” Kealey explained.
So the Pan Am competitors — both men and women — hopped on their bikes and entered the southbound DVP at Eastern Ave., travelling north.
Once the call came in to police communications, officers working in the area caught up with the athletes just south of Bloor St. and escorted them off at Don Mills Rd.
“They were very co-operative and apologetic,” Kealey stressed.
No one was injured and there were no issues, he added.
Described by Kealey as road racers, the cyclists were riding on the shoulder — not in the HOV lanes.
Aside from one annual biking event, cyclists are never allowed on the DVP, he reiterated.
“It’s only once a year for Ride for Heart,” Kealey said. “That’s the only time cyclists are allowed up on the DVP.”
As for the visiting cyclists — who were simply looking for a stretch of roadway to train on — Toronto Police officers introduced them to the Bayview extension as a safer option.
“Everything was good,” Kealey said.
In a brief statement, the Brazilian Olympic Committee apologized for the DVP excursion: “The athletes didn’t know about this prohibition and won’t do it anymore.”

My son and I went down the BMO field and watched Rugby 7s matches to four hours, yesterday. A lot of the matches were pretty one sided but there was lots of excitement as well. What a great sport! The seven men per side makes for a fast and fluid games where anything can happen. It sure beats the hell out of watching North American style football with its set-piece, stop-go and players padded like explosives defusers. I'm hooked on this game. My kid plays it and there is no bubble wrapping of the kids. They get scrapes and dings and there are NO complaints about it. Not only do they learn extraordinary teamwork, they also learn sportsmanship and stoicism.

Great game.

Kicked Yankee a55, big time, too.

We did, stay that is and we did win some more Tec. Medal count as of 5:45PM PST is 16 Gold, 14 Silver and 10 Bronze for a total of 40.
