A 12-year old peewee hockey player has a broken wrist, after being hauled
down by the referee in Winnipeg who was trying to break up a fight.
Kainen Bell was hurt in the final minutes of a game between peewee teams
from the Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation and the Sagkeeng First Nation
as part of the Southeast Winter Tribal Days annual hockey tournament in
Winnipeg on Sunday.
“When I hit the ground it went dark for two seconds, then I rolled to the side
and a kid on my team pulled me out of the game,” Kainen said Monday in
an interview with Global Winnipeg at his home on Sagkeeng First Nation,
his left arm in a sling.
A video on YouTube shows the ref grab the player from behind and fall on
top of him. Then an adult jumps off the bench and grabs the ref who is also
slashed on the back by another player.
Bell’s parents spoke to CTV News in Winnipeg.
“It shows him grabbing him by the back of the armpits and twirling, pivoting
and slamming him on the ice,” his father Robert Bell described.
The boy's coach is also livid about what happened, saying there is a history
between that particular official and her team.
“I put my children on the ice expecting that they are going to be in safe hands
and being refed a fair, clean, even game, not being harmed by a ref,” said
Sagkeeng coach Stepahnie Tardiff.
Winnipeg Police say they are looking into the situation but no charges have
been laid at this point.
