12-year-old hockey player hurt when referee breaks up fight
Adult jumps off the bench and grabs ref after altercation

From: VIDEO: 12-year-old hockey player hurt when referee breaks up fight | News Talk 980 CJME (video here).

A 12-year old peewee hockey player has a broken wrist, after being hauled
down by the referee in Winnipeg who was trying to break up a fight.

Kainen Bell was hurt in the final minutes of a game between peewee teams
from the Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation and the Sagkeeng First Nation
as part of the Southeast Winter Tribal Days annual hockey tournament in
Winnipeg on Sunday.

“When I hit the ground it went dark for two seconds, then I rolled to the side
and a kid on my team pulled me out of the game,” Kainen said Monday in
an interview with Global Winnipeg at his home on Sagkeeng First Nation,
his left arm in a sling.

A video on YouTube shows the ref grab the player from behind and fall on
top of him. Then an adult jumps off the bench and grabs the ref who is also
slashed on the back by another player.

Bell’s parents spoke to CTV News in Winnipeg.

“It shows him grabbing him by the back of the armpits and twirling, pivoting
and slamming him on the ice,” his father Robert Bell described.

The boy's coach is also livid about what happened, saying there is a history
between that particular official and her team.

“I put my children on the ice expecting that they are going to be in safe hands
and being refed a fair, clean, even game, not being harmed by a ref,” said
Sagkeeng coach Stepahnie Tardiff.

Winnipeg Police say they are looking into the situation but no charges have
been laid at this point.

Warning this video at the LINK above contains foul language.

-Peewee Hockey is for players under 13 years of age.
-The parrents....I'm not sure what to say here.
-I'd LINK directly to the Vid on Youtube, but you'd have to
log in to see it there due to the Mothers language, like so:

-The Ref claims he slipped when breaking up the fight.

I don't know, the whole thing is so grainy. There looks like there's a fair bit of force there when they go down. At the same time it kind of looks like the other kid wouldn't let go so maybe the "force" was from pulling them away/apart??

The whole issue could have been avoided simply by the kids not starting a fight in the first place. I blame the parents.

I agree. A fight, or fights in this case. Gotta love the mother here, and the guy
who jumps on the referee, and the player who chops the ref across the head
(double handed like an axe) with his stick from behind. You couldn't pay me
enough to ref hockey at that level.

For sure, I couldn't make head nor tail of it. The footage would have to be slowed down to about 1/4 speed to make any judgments.

I think the ref simply fell and accidentally took the kid down with him (who was certainly no angel in the end). There wasn't any malice or intent to injure, it was simply an accident. The behaviour of the parents was despicable, way to be the "adults" there, folks! If the kid has ceased with his thuggery when first pulled seperated, then he would not have been injured.

The refs are the last people I would blame in this case. Hell of a job to try to sort all that out with all the adults egging their kids on to fight.

The ref was simply trying to stop a kid from going after another kid and then fell. The coach jumping off the bench was pure stupidity.

The way some of the parents reacted, you would think the referee started swinging haymakers at their "precious little angel".
