The Montreal Alouettes are no doubt hoping quarterback Troy Smith has more success in the CFL than the last three Heisman Trophy winners who ventured north of the border.

The Alouettes signed Smith, who won the Heisman with Ohio State University in 2006, to a two-year contract Wednesday.

"We welcome Troy to the Alouettes," Montreal general manager/coach Jim Popp said. "We've been in discussions together for well over three months and have been patiently waiting for Troy to finish his commitments at Ohio State. We'll have to fast track Troy in order to get him over the learning curve of the CFL and caught up to speed over the next several weeks. He's here to learn and grasp the game for future competition.”

The one-time NFLer -- he spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and one with the San Francisco 49ers -- has bounced around in the three years since. He last played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL but was on the Pittsburgh Steelers' roster for six months during the winter of 2012.

Former Heisman winners haven't had much luck in the CFL since Doug Flutie returned to the NFL. Andre Ware, Ricky Williams and Eric Crouch -- all of whom played with the Argos at one time -- had little impact during their brief CFL careers.

It will take awhile for Troy to come up to speed on the ins and outs of playing in the CFL so fans won't be seeing him on the field anytime soon but this is a move in the right direction - just hope he works out for the team.

Troy Smith's odd path:

Smith was signed by the Baltimore Ravens (NFL) in 2007. In the 2008 season, he was named as the starter, with Kyle Boller as backup and a new rookie from a Division 2 college named Joe Flacco as kind of a "development project." During the 2008 pre-season, Boller went down with a season-ending shoulder injury. Then, four days before opening day, Troy Smith caught a wicked throat infection. So the team went to the unheralded rookie and said "You're starting on Sunday." Flacco won that game, and has started eighty-nine consecutive games, the most recent being Super Bowl XLVII, in which he was named Most Valuable Player.

Smith backed up Flacco for two years, then moved on. It was luck, timing, and a freak throat infection that cost him his starting job in the NFL. He is a very talented, tough quarterback, and he'll do the Alouettes (who need it) a lot of good.

Thanks for this, Tec............looking forward to watching him when he finally hits the field.

IMHO, the fortunes of the Al's rode on the hiring of Dan Hawkins who replaced long-time HC Mark Trestman but it was a rough ride from the very start. I believe the team should have acted faster when they saw that Hawkins was not sticking to the game plan as he had agreed to do. Watching the team and especially Anthony struggling game after game was painful to see - my heart went out to Tony. When Montreal finally decided to rid themselves of Hawkins, GM Jim Popp was picked to step-in. Popp's record is not encouraging to Al fans but they had do something and Popp at least knows the talent of the team and is familiar with the playbook. Their first outing under him was not a great one but they had little time to adjust. Hopefully, with the bye, they have managed to get things back on track. Unfortunately, the teams next meeting is with my Riders, currently tied for top spot in the West. After losing to Calgary last week, the Riders are not going to go easy on Montreal. The loss  will drop them even further in the Eastern standings - just above the even worse Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
