Attendance at Church of England services has plunged to its lowest level ever as the Archbishop of Canterbury warned it was battling to maintain its place in an increasingly “anti-Christian” culture.

Official figures – based on an annual pew count – show that only 1.4 per cent of the population of England now attend Anglican services on a typical Sunday morning.

Even the Church’s preferred “weekly” attendance figures, which include those at mid-week or extra services, has slipped below one million for the first time ever.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, acknowledged the slump in an address to Anglican leaders around the world at a crisis meeting to discuss a split over homosexuality.

In a plea to archbishops and bishops from Africa and other parts of the “global south” not to break off communion permanently with more liberal branches of Anglicanism, he said it would be “easy to paint a very gloomy picture” about the Church of England’s prospects.

Serve some fried chicken lunches now and then. And then, when a person who has tithed to your religion all of their lives dies,,,pay for their damn funeral. Give back a little of what you suck out of your member. Then maybe they'll think you give a shyt about them.

I was driving some seniors to church for a while-it was beyond/below sad.

500 member church maybe 30 people show up to a regular service-this is Presbyterian, Anglicans & United the Catholics might have some immigrants with few kids running around outside after service but not the others just oldies-maybe a few Korean Presbys had kids but that was it.

And talk about valuable real estate in the better parts of town!

Millions & millions & millions tied up in those buildings so someone somewhere will benefit sooner or later.

I'd buy an old church.
On Vancouver's West side you'd have to take it apart & cart it away to be resurrected (sorry about that couldn't resist) somewhere else the land is the thing-even though the churches look OK in terms of architectural significance they count for very little.

Of course that's not just true here but everywhere across the country mainstream Christian religions are rapidly fading into obscurity-the writing is on the wall.

I just remember that one of my old associates bought a Scots Presbyterian church in East Van and another renovated it for an artist studio/workshop great looking space but useless for anything else.

Even if the Church of England dies, the Authorized Version of the Holy Bible will survive for as long as people read English. That version might be full of translation errors, and some significant (mostly in its Old Testament) which make it a poor scholarly translation, but its elegance still makes it the best literary translation into the English language today.

That version of the Holy Bible is the Church of England's greatest literary contribution to the world.

I can't say the same for the Book of Common Prayer though. Unlike the Authorized Version of the Holy Bible which many non-Anglican English-speakers read, only Anglicans read the Book of Common Prayer for the most part. If that Church sinks, so will the Book of Common Prayer along with it.

Jesus when you can't sell faith things are bad. The reason some churches
are not doing well is they are not preaching what the faithful want to hear.
Churches are taking positions that are contrary to the public opinion of our
time. They do not realize it is about meeting on Sunday for a pep talk and
then gathering together for breakfast. Face it God's representatives don't
want to give a message the people want to hear they have choices and will
go elsewhere for pep talks and breakfast. God is a commodity face it
give us what we want from our brand of faith or we will chose an android
religion one where we get all the same sacraments with only the message
we want to hear.

Probably because the poor souls have been brow beaten into believing it's intolerant to practice their religion with all the f*cking muslims in the country.

Have you even see pic of how many refugees are flooding the EU, have you seen any Muslims in Canada that are like those groups?
Christians kill a lot more Muslim yearly rather than the numbers being the other way around so they aren't shy about practicing their bent versions of the Bible.

It's not just the prevalent anti-Christian culture that there is in Britain, perpetuated by our political leaders and media who love everything Islamic and hate everything Christian (especially Protestant and especially Anglican), which is causing a decline in Church of England attendance.

Another factor is the Church of England itself - it's become too PC. It's like the spiritual wing of the Graun, what with its unChristianlike support for things like gay marriage. It will get more people into its churches if it started actually preaching the CHRISTIAN message by saying that homosexuality is a sin etc. Instead, it keeps trying to be all PC and is therefore making things up as it goes along rather than just sticking rigidly to the Christian message regardless of what government and the PC Brigade says, as it should be doing

What are the attendance figures for other Christian denominations?

Having said that, whilst there may be a decline in the number of Anglicans actually attending church, this in no way implies a decline in Anglicanism in England. It is still by far the biggest religion in England and the UK and is England's state religion.

What, in your interpretation, is the Christian message?

Bull****. Christians are the most persecuted religious group on Earth and the people causing a big part, if not most, of that persecution is Muslims.
