London Ready For the Looney Bin

Sex Theme Park to Open in London
Friday, October 07, 2005

LONDON — Move over, Eros.

Developers announced plans Friday to open a multimillion dollar sexual "theme park" near London's Piccadilly Circus, home to the much-photographed statue of the Greek god of love.

Backers say the London Academy of Sex and Relationships, due to open next spring, will not be a sleazy sex museum, but an educational multimedia attraction that will teach visitors to become better lovers and provide valuable information about disease and sexual problems.

Located within the Trocadero entertainment center — just around the corner from Soho, London's red-light district — the $8.3 million project will feature unspecified "high tech and interactive exhibits."

Alex Rayner, a spokesman for the project, said it was "committed to avoiding the sleazy image that the sex industry usually conjures."

"Titillation is not the goal," he said. "It's meant to be educational. It's meant to be informative."

The privately funded project has support from sexual health organizations including the Sexual Dysfunction Association and AIDS charity The Terrence Higgins Trust.

"It is long overdue that the U.K. faces up to its responsibilities in the sexual arena — we cannot simply avoid mankind's leading preoccupation and the issues that go with it," said the academy's director of exhibits, Dr. Sarah Brewer. "The academy is the perfect vehicle by which to address these important matters in an exciting, amusing and yet educational way."

Several cities around the world — including New York, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Paris — are home to erotic museums. Typically, they exhibit everything from pornography to high-minded paintings exploring local sexual attitudes and culture.

Well, I think this exhibit would have to be seen to understand what the article is saying. I really have no idea of what the Brits
are after with this idea. It does sound bizarre, though.

It is indeed bizarre. However, why in the world no one there is objecting to this lunacy is beyond me. It'll be situated next to a circus where many young children will be present. I don't know about you, but in my book, children and sexual theme parks do not mix.

I'm afraid society as we know it is heading down the tubes.

I'm not sure what they are going at, but if it's truly an educational thing then I say, good for them. And if it's where kids can see it even better because we need to teach kids about sexual health long before they are old enough to need it If you try teaching them only when you think they'll need it they won't pay much attention. Young kids will pay attention to anythng they are taught, teenagers may well not. The sooner kids have correct information about the important issues surrounding sexuality and sexual health the better.

Picadilly Circus isn't the kind of circus you are thinking of :) It's just an historic place name.

Interesting. I had heard of the place before, but for some reason had assumed it was as the name implies .. a circus. Well, no worry, the circus concept is not lost here. There will be one right next to the Picadilly Circus ... in the form of a sexual theme park.

I'll bet they are trying to draw in some French tourists,eh? I had to look circus up in my dictionary & one of the meanings is "circle". I don't know about this project as a good idea or not-the Brits aren't thought of when the word "sexy' is used :)

Maybe this will help to cure that.

Why in the world would you be against this, James? It has nothing to do with you whatsoever. It has nothing to do with your country either.

RE: Officials in London H

I always wondered why his parents named him "Oral". Given the man's personality, wouldn't "Anal" have been more accurate?

Repressed society? No such thing. This is Will Rogers county. He was a great performer back in his day. We have an international airport in Oklahoma City and museums named after him. He was also part Cherokee indian. In addition, Oklahoma has a rich Native American history. The name "Oklahoma" traslates to "Land of the Red Man".

Oklahoma is also referred to as the "Sooner" State. The name comes from the University of Oklahoma athletic teams.

Well, the UK is our closest ally and when they come up with this nonsense, we should be concerned. Concerned that the folks there have not gone completely out of their minds.

The British people did not vote the American radical Christian right into power, James. In fact, most of the Brits that I talk to look at you guys and are concerned that you've gone completely out of your minds.

Museums Opened:

New York Oct - 2002
Paris - 1997
Barcelona - 1997? (website copyright date)
Amsterdam - 1985

So the U.S. took that plunge into erotica three years ago. Does this mean that the U.S. has already lost it's marbles? I guess the artistic community has taken a page from Blair and is just following the U.S. lead. Leading by example isn't so easy, is it, NJ.

Oklahoma is indeed a very special state, and Texas took them to task yesterday and beat the sh*t out of them at the Cotton Bowl.
After 5 years of the Red River Shootout, it was nice to see Texas rise from the ashes.

I know it's your country, but you may as well get it right:

Oklahoma
In 1889, the Indian Territory was opened to settlers. Thousands of people lined up on the border and, when the signal was given, they raced into the territory to claim their land. Some people went in early to claim their land. They became known as Sooners.
Hence, Oklahoma's nickname today is “The Sooner State”.
