The government should lower the minimum wage, cautiously deregulate (we still need healthy food and stable banks for example), and aggressively seek out free trade with other countries.

How would lowering the minimum wage help?

Well, try raising the minimum wage to 50.00 an hour and see what happens. Even a low minimum wage has the same effect but just on a lower scale.

That would actually encourage more investment as a way to avoid taxes.

Other than punishing the wealthy via a success tax, exactly what are you accomplishing?

Basically, you remove anyone from earning more than your stipulated amount from earning any more. Further, you absolutely exclude Canada as a destination where someone like Bill Gates would ever consider relocating to... And with that exclusion of this ultra wealthy demographic, you can say bye-bye to any and all of the philanthropic or charitable contributions they make, let alone the economic impact they have.

Damn you're wealthy!

What an over complicated arrangement you propose.... Why not take a 180 degree turn and set up an economic environment that encourages all people to succeed such that you develop a really large population of wealthy persons... Hell, establish a lower tax rate for everyone to encourage more spending - that leads to greater employment - that leads to even more people kicking-in to that tax pool (lower rates remember) and magically all of society benefits

Poor people (as defined by how much money they make) spend something like 170% of their income.

SO minimum wage workers are not socking away money for another day. They are busily spending every penny they earn, and then some.

The only money out there are needs encouragement to get spent is in the hands of people who make more money than they spend on things.

Those are the people who can be encouraged.

A minimum wage job is something you do a year or so until you prove you are a reliable worker, then you look for better work.

If you are a reliable worker you probably will get at least one raise and promotion within a year .

the theory is that families that qualify for food stamps also qualify for every other state and federal income support (welfare)- its is informally called the "Walmart Tax".

You can't have a minimum wage debate without talking about poverty in a larger sense.

Will increasing min wage a couple of bucks an hour actually get people off welfare?

Probably not.

Does having people in poverty cost us any money?

Yes, it does. In many ways.

OHIO? Really. Besides the fact that OHIO's stats on food stamps have no relevance here in Canada, it's just really sloppy research Hoidie. No Canadian studies, reports, or inquiries to quote? Strange that, as it occurs to me there are a plethora of documents available on the internet covering that very subject.

Took me a couple of minutes to find this: http://www.povnet.org/regional/canad...verty-research

Increase the min wage to $50/hr, see what the ramifications are

There is a real lack of disposable income in Canada lately, being we are the kings of personal debt, and with rising interest rates on credit, and rising gas prices, we are headed for a super duper financial disaster.

The only budgets that balance themselves are dead ones.

Not really a very high income threshold. Especially if it includes capital gains.

Yes, it does. In many ways.

Minimum wage was never intended to raise families on. For that one family member needs a real job like building oil refineries or running a bank.
